Miners beat Indians 6-0 MARYSVILLE — The offense sputtered, but the defense sparkled and the Nevada Union Miners rolled to their fourth consecutive .win-.of the season Friday with a hard earned 6-0 win over the Marysville Indians. It was the opening Sierra Foothill League season game for Nevada Union and marked the first time in 10 yearsthe Miners have been able to dump the Indians in the opener. To. add further interest to the SFL openers, Oakmont remained undefeated by blasting defending champion Yuba City, 20-0, Marysville and Yuba City have dominated the SFL for the past nine years, but neither has won a game this year. The Miners will host Oakmont at Miners’ Stadium next Friday in what could be the game that decides the championship. ‘Spouting the highest rated offense in northern California, the Nevada Union passing game faltered and the Minefs had to grind out a victory’ the hard way Friday. . The hard way was Blair Van Vliet who kept the ball in Nevada Union's possession by picking up 107 yards in 18 carries. . Van Viiet was pounded time after time by big Marysville defenders, but his determination and balance added up to 5.9 yards a carry. The hard way was for the defense to stop Marysville from scoring, Number 66 made a lot of tackles. Number 65. was everywhere, Linebackers Mike Moule and Bob McDonald led the defensive effort which kept the Indians in their_own territory through most of the game. In the first quarter the Indians advanced to the Miners 26-yard-line. In the second half Marysville advanced to the Miners 36, Those were the closest the Indians came to scoring. On offense, fullback Bill Henke and Moule, the pulling guard, cleared the way for Van Vliet. Quarterback Gary Mitchell had his worst night as a passer, completing four of 18 for 65. yards. He suffered his first interception of the. season. One of the passes paid off to the tune of six big points and the winning margin. With time running out in the second quarter. the Miners took possession on their 41-yard line. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Marysville 38. . Mitchell was thrown for a loss to the 42, With the half running out Nevada Union called time. On the next play Mitchell handed to Henke who rambled seven yards-off tackle to the Marysville 35. The Miners called time with 20 seconds remaining. This time Mitchell faked the same play to Henke, dropped back and fired a long pass toward split end Jerry Anthney near the geal line, Anthney was covered by two defenders but went up and came down with the football at the one-yard line. Anthney was belted but kept his balance and with a great second effort dove over for the touchdown, The conversion attempt failed and the Miners had the only score of the game. In the second half the Miners on Van Vliet's running, quickly advanced deep into Indian territory. Nevada Union kept field possession -but was unable to score. Time after time Mitchell avoided a big rush to throw passes which were dropped. The Miners great.flanker, Noel White, had his. worst game as a receiver, catching one pass for seven yards. : “On defense White was tops, moving up from the safety position to make tackles, He intercepted a pass, his third this season, It was inthe fourth quarter when White stepped into the
limelight. With memories of the past, the huge Nevada Union crowd which traveled to Marysville, estimated at between 12001400, was holding their collective breaths with a narrow 6-0 lead. For the first time in the second half, Nevada Union was deep in its own territory. The Miners were in punt formation. on their own 13-yard line and Marysville blitzed. White, seeing a host of Indians heading his way, stepped inside the onrush and booted a shorty over the center. The punt was away and White took the brunt of the play when he was racked good, A roughing the kicker penalty was called. Downfield Ralph Hendrix was picking the ball up for Marysville but was unable to handle it. The fumble was recovered by the Miners on their own 32-yard line. The penalty was refused. Time was running out and Mitchell called on Van Vliet who rambled 13 yards to the . Miner 45. Marysville held and the Miners again went into punt formation, White punted a beauty to the 10-yard line. Craig Hammons grabbed it and Miner fans held their breath as he worked his way up field and headed for the sidelines. Number 87, Tom Freestone, moved into the picture for the Miners and made a sure tacklo on the Marysville 32-yard stripe. The Indians threw four desperation passes, but it was too late. The Miners passed a mental point this season by beating the Marysville Indians, The Miners made few mistakes. No fumbles and only two penalties kept Nevada Union out of trouble. Henke added 58 yards to the © Nevada Union’ attack. In total yardage the Miners rolled up 223, a season low, while Marysville had 159, The Indians were able to complete only one pass in 14 attempts against the Miner deJerry Anthney for 35 yards, * THE PLAY that beat Marysville for the first time in 10 years. Gary Mitchell cuts loose with a pass that went to BLAIR VAN VLIET rambles for yardage against the Indians, Van Vliet carried 18 times for 107 yards. KERRY BLACKBURN receives one of eight catches he made during the junior varsity contest. Blackburn has been an outstanding performer on both offense and defense. Second half: surge fails, MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Papooses outscored the. Nevada Union Nuggets 40-26 in the Sierra Foothill League opener in Marysville Friday. Dave Rayburn filled the air with passes to awake Nevada Union in the second half, but it was too late as Marysville had built a 40-8 lead. Marysville kept its first string unit in throughout the contest. Ron Lowenstein chalked up the first touchdown for Nevada Union with a second-period plunge. With the Nuggets unable to get untracked, Marysville led at halftime 24-8 and quickly added two scores in the third period. Rayburn started fine slotback Kerry Blackburn and the Nuggets began to move, The first of three Rayburn touchdown passes went 29 yards to John Wilcox, The Nuggets came back with their final two in the fourth period. Crosswhite grabbed a 12-yard toss to make it 40-20. Near the end of the game, three straight passes to Crosswhite moved the ball to the Marysville 10-yard line, Rayburn found Wilcox open and the Nuggets had another score to make it a 40-26 final. In all the freshman quarterback completed 16 out of 30 passes for 201 yards, He also rolled out for long gains against a tough Marysville defense. Blackburn grabbed eight passes for 77 yards. Wilcox received four for 60 yards.
