Golden Autumn
tour planned
for Oct. 11
The 10th annual Golden Autumn Home Tour, sponsored by the
Sierra Nevada Memorial Miners Hospital Auxiliary, one of the
biggest events of the season, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Oct. 11.
There will be two homes open for the tour in Grass Valley and
five places in Nevada City including Trinity Episcopal Church,
Berliner’s law offices, the National Hotel and the American
Victorian Museum.
Betty Young will be hostess at Grass Valley’s Jones Hospital,
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Levine, on South Church
Street. The three story, 30-room mansion was built in the 1850s,
reconstructed in the 1890s and after the turn of the century was
converted into a hospital and used as such until the mid-1960s.
The Levines purchased the home this year and have been
renovating and reconstructing the house and the carriage house
for months. ;
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harlow, on Townsend

dentist in Grass Valley. Dr. Hayes married Lillian Carson; their

Trinity Episcopal Church in Nevada City is the site of Caldwell’s Upper Store, the original name for the settlement that
sprang up on the banks of Deer Creek when gold was discovered
there.
The classic structure opened in 1873 and replaced its
predecessor which was lost in one of Nevada City’s disastrous
fires. Mary Newton will be the hostess at the church, one of
Nevada City’s prettiest sites.Berliner’s Offices, located at 224 Main Street in Nevada City
has recently undergone a total metamorphosis. It is now an
office building, restored and furnished with great attention
given to details and craftsmanship.
The building houses six separate offices, four bathrooms, two
kitchens and a conference room and was decorated by Mary
Ann Berliner. Gladys Perkins will be the hostess there.
‘The National Hotel is well known in the area and has been
restored by owners Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ness; their own
apartment can be visited on the tour. They have furnished. their
“home” with furniture dating back as far as 1770.
Suite 39 may also be seen with its antique furniture from the
Isle of Wales dating back to the 1850s including a desk, chairs
and dressers. Hostess at the hotel will be Edith Hurst.
The annual afternoon tea will be served at the number seven
tour stop — the American Victorian Museum on Spring Street,
Nevada City. Serving will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and Loana Beeson,
“artist in action,” will be featured during those hours.
The museum occupies historic Miner’s Foundry, site of the
manufacture of machine parts and architectural iron used
throughout the world. The famous Pelton Wheel, important link
between the water wheel: and modern generator, was first
manufactured here in 1878.
It is the only museum in America devoted exclusively to
collecting, preserving and exhibiting art, craft and artifacts
from the Victorian period of 1840 to 1900. Cleo Dalton will be the
