Poetically speaking the question has been raised “
what is so rare as a day in June.” Well, we Nevada County
folk have the answer to that — it’s one of our gorgeous
‘October days. Only trouble is we need a month of Indian
Summer to get us braced for the long cold winter ahead.

’ The fall hay is in the barn but with this new and
unexpected mouth to feed I shall have to have more. The
new mouth is darling. He is two weeks old now and is as
happy and healthy as if he had been a planned-for addition. I like the name Ferdinand for little bull calves and
this little rascal is just as cute and curious as ‘Ferdinand’
ever was. I expect he will become Ferdi the second. His

is a Beef Shorthorn and at 18 months of age he looks as if
he will be a fine animal. He is to sire their new babies and
looks worthy of the job. My two little bulls are just waiting
to become steers and will go to market as soon as they are

There will be a new Nevada County Historical Society
Bulletin out soon and it’s on Rough and Ready. It
TOUCHES on most of Rough and Ready’s known history.
I found a group of our neighbors, the other day, who had
not heard of the fame of the Osceola Mine. They were, in
fact, not even familiar with the name or the location. The

rather ruggedly, up the Osceola Ravine from Highnety 28.
The Ravine is just to the right of Squirrel Creek which
crosses Highway 20. There is nothing remaining of the
mine that can be seen but it is interesting to know where it
once was.
It didn’t make the grade as Quartz mines go. Asa
Fippin always spoke glowingly of the Osceola and felt it
was never properly developed. Thompson and West
comment on the mismanagement involved in its
development thus “‘very few men know how to keep a
hotel, a still fewer number know how to work a mine and
run a quartz mill successfully.”” Most of my information
comes from ‘Thompson and West tho’ I did get some from
mining journals. Thompson and West gives credit for
their story of the Osceola.to Bean’s History which I
believe was dated 1869. I-have never even seen a copy of
Bean’s History of Nevada County. The few remaining
copies are used for reference only.
“In the fall of 1855 the Osceola ledge, about one mile
south from the town of Rough and Ready, was prospected
by John Eudey, Thomas Euren and James Truran, under
contract with E. W. Roberts. A remarkably rich pocket or
‘bunch’ was found in this ledge, and in addition to several
thousands of dollars taken out in solid specimens, a lot of
several loads worked by -mill process, returned an
average of $225 per ton. The company was immediately
incorporated, and caused a 24-stamp mill to be erected,
with all necessary houses, etc., and commenced crushing
rockin April 1865; —.
“The ledge having been sold to pay debts of the
company — it has been lately purchased by Messrs. Tew
and Morgan, who are proceeding to work upon and
develop the mine —.”’ This venture too failed.
‘At the Osceola a ten stamp mill was erected in 1876,
and ten tons of ore crushed, that yielded $377. Rock extracted in running a tunnel on the ledge failed to prove
satisfactory and work was discontinued on it. A shaft was
