Quality control of mountain
water may be set at session
The Central Valley Regional
Water Quality Control Board
has announced a public hearing
on a water quality control policy
for the Upper Yuba River. The
meeting will be held in the Community Hall in Downieville on
September 13 and will begin at
10 in the morning.
The Upper Yuba River Policy
Area is described as the streams
and tributaries upstream from
Rice Crossing at the head of
Englebright Reservoir. The
North Yuba, the Middle Yuba,
Bullards Bar Reservoir, and
Milton Reservoir are the major
‘Water bodies covered by the
policy. The Upper Yuba is the
source of about 1,800,000 acre
feet of water each year and the
proposed policy sets guidelines
for protecting the quality of the
water.
The chief uses made of the
waters .are recreation, fishing
and fish propagation, power production, domestic and municipal
water supply, aesthetic enjoyment, and mining. The streams
may transport or disperse
wastes from these activities.
The existing quality of the
streams is very good and eminently suited for the uses made
of the waters, The objective of
the policy is to maintain the
existing quality levels.
In addition to the public hearing, the Regional Board will take
action on a proposed pollution
control policy for waste discharges in mountainous areas,
The Board states that the excellent quality of mountain streams
must be protected and consideration must be given to the variable conditions in different
mountainous areas.
