The accession of Gerald Ford. to the presidency and his designation. of Nelson Rockefeller as VP has pretty mss wobee Reagan’s not too well aspirations to be the Republican nominee two years hence. And he is not wearing his tment too well. It was Reagan’s desire to be ~ President which compelled his fierce defense of President Nixon right down to the last ditch. It certainly wasn’t any great love for Nixon for he had oppased his nomination in 1968. But he now wanted desparately for Nixon to finish out his term so that the 1976 Republican Presidential Convention would He had p to stage a takeover of the convention similar to that of Nixon’s in 1968. He recalled that his own in emerging as a condidate permitted Nixon to gather up the delegates long before the convention was held. Nixon did it by making himself available in the years prec the convention as a speaker and campaigner for Republican candidates throughout the country. It was this ambition which prompted Reagan to forego a third. term effort for governor. This avoided the risk of a defeat and at the same time freed him to campaign for Republicans during the next two years. As it turned out it probably was a mistake for himself and argued at the time, Reagan was the one person who could the Republican hold on California by running again. If the polls are right, the Democrats are currently leading in the November bids whi Wilson in 1912. , Robert M. LaFollette’s bolting of -the Republican’s in 1924 wasn’t as harmful to the GOP but it didn’t advance LaF ollette.
