Geysers of flaming oil, gasoline and debris leaped hundreds of
feet skyward after lightning struck the large commercial storage

Willis Polk, architect who designed Bourn Mansion. and its
gardens, died in San Francisco. He.and his sister, Countess Gladys
de Buyer, the widow of a French cavalry officer, were frequent
visitors here. Without schooling or art training, Polk rose from a St.
Louis newsboy to a national authority on architecture and art. His s
death was attributed to influenza, from which he’d suffered only
five weeks prior to his passing.
