‘THE REDWOOD EXHIBITION
Most Californians in 1853 dismissed stories of giant
Nevada County Nugget
redwood
trees as merely. deranged ramblings of crazed miners but it gave
H.W. Hanford an idea. :
He would cut down the biggest redwood tree he could find and
take it on a world-wide exhibition. People would flock to see it and if
he would charge a modest admission he would soon become a rich
man. : ;
. Finding the right tree was easy. Captain Hanford quickly
Jocated a magnificent example along the Stanislaus River just
ee But getting it out was something
_ feet across. Ordinary saws and axes barely seratched the surface
of its thick bark: The only way to possibly bring the tree down was
to drill holes from the surface to the center all the way around its
girth. It took five men 22 days to complete the task.
Then wedges were driven into the tree with huge logs hung with
heavy ropes from the redwood’s trunk. Qne afternoon, as the men
were eating lunch, a gust of wind blew the tree down with a crash
that felt like an earthquake and could be heard for miles.
‘Hanford personally directed the next step. Workers
carefully peeled the bark from the fallen colossus in 50-foot lengths,
marked and numbered each piece and gently packed it in a special
‘The bark was speeded into San Francisco, reconstructed with
painstaking exactness and triumphantly revealed to the world to
. show the magnitude of California’s bounty.
Cheered by his spectacular success in San Francisco, Captain
Hanford dismantled his prized showpiece and packed it aboard a
the East.
But in New York City the naive Hanford ran into veteran
_ ghowman P.T. Barnum who wasn’t about to have this upstart west
Barnum’s influence was felt all over town and Hanford found
none of the owds or success of which he had
dreamed. He exhibited his tree for awhile on Broadway but the
show soon failed and his dreams of riches went up in smoke. Not
long after, the bark shell was mysteriously destroyed in a fire.
