~, £ 3 2 a 6 The California Country ‘THE REDWOOD EXHIBITION Most Californians in 1853 dismissed stories of giant Nevada County Nugget redwood trees as merely. deranged ramblings of crazed miners but it gave H.W. Hanford an idea. : He would cut down the biggest redwood tree he could find and take it on a world-wide exhibition. People would flock to see it and if he would charge a modest admission he would soon become a rich man. : ; . Finding the right tree was easy. Captain Hanford quickly Jocated a magnificent example along the Stanislaus River just ee But getting it out was something _ feet across. Ordinary saws and axes barely seratched the surface of its thick bark: The only way to possibly bring the tree down was to drill holes from the surface to the center all the way around its girth. It took five men 22 days to complete the task. Then wedges were driven into the tree with huge logs hung with heavy ropes from the redwood’s trunk. Qne afternoon, as the men were eating lunch, a gust of wind blew the tree down with a crash that felt like an earthquake and could be heard for miles. ‘Hanford personally directed the next step. Workers carefully peeled the bark from the fallen colossus in 50-foot lengths, marked and numbered each piece and gently packed it in a special ‘The bark was speeded into San Francisco, reconstructed with painstaking exactness and triumphantly revealed to the world to . show the magnitude of California’s bounty. Cheered by his spectacular success in San Francisco, Captain Hanford dismantled his prized showpiece and packed it aboard a the East. But in New York City the naive Hanford ran into veteran _ ghowman P.T. Barnum who wasn’t about to have this upstart west Barnum’s influence was felt all over town and Hanford found none of the owds or success of which he had dreamed. He exhibited his tree for awhile on Broadway but the show soon failed and his dreams of riches went up in smoke.
