I had just told her the latest story about the Siamese traveling salesman. And she countered with: Whowas the lady I saw you with last night? I said that was no lady that was my wife. Fact was that she couldn't speak Gaelic and I couldn't speak Thai but somehow we were on the same radar beam and we soon had the entire market ringing with laughter. Happy soul, her teeth almost gone, she sat by the hour trying to sell a few cents worth of tapioca root. Shaven heads, a skirt, a scarf, a yellow robe and an inner light make the Buddhist monk. His prayers, not Buddha, can do something for him. A devout family wakes up in the morning and places offerings on the altar, starting the day with prayer. It then prepares a gift of rice it will make to the saffron-robed monk, who a little later in the day will stand before the door, erect, dignified, his head turned aside to show he is not asking for a favorbut just giving the household a chance to acquire merits. After their bowls have been filled, the monks will leave, slowly making for the next door, without thanks, withouta word. Almost every man in Thailand becomes a monk for at least a short time, perhaps two months. They must live on gifts, eat only once a day, remain chaste, and confess their sins every twoweeks. I learned all this from this 20 year old at the foot of the standing Buddha, over two stories high. Of these three the most romantic, glittering, charming, mysterious and thrilling is Bangkok. We stayed at the plush Erawan Hotel and even the lizards that had to be brushed from the inside hallways were bright green in color. At night the push cart vendors displayed their wares under the soft glow of burning candles. A city of vast contrast the land of Anna and the King of Siamof great universities and where husband and wife work side by side building roads with pick and shovel for $1 a day each. Who are these kindly people the Thais whose name means "Free"? They come from many countries and many
pagan groups. Likethe United States, like France, Thailandis a melting pot. Their origin is obscure. Most anthropologists believe they came from China about 728 AD. They seem to have the Chinese talent for organization, administration, the ingenious living. I found them the happiest people in the orient. And I found that laughter is the best possible means of communication, Like this picture taken in a sort of a Thai farmer's marSel Supper time, The Thais eat with spoons rice, curries, chicken, eggs and many vegetables. We foutid little poverty in Thailand they appear to have plenty to eat and are quite self-sufficient. Most want to be better educated to find their place in the world, < cS = ™ : s 1 yee om i} i By motor launch we sailed for four hours through the canals of Bangkok as the farsffand Quartz Jewelry mers, the artisans, the merchants brought their products to sell. Comes True ROCKLIN ---Once ina while yearbook inscriptions have a way of coming true years afterward, A notation Harold Weaver, president of Sierra College, made in a student's yearbook 20 years ago came back to life last week. E.F. Doolittle of Truckee sent a letter to W eaver with a clipping from the Placer Junior College yearbook of two decades ago enclosed, The yearbook scribble, in Instructor Weaver's own handwriting, readin part, “It'sa privilege tohave a Doolittle at PJC (Placer JC), Keep ‘em coming.” Ed Doolittle followed that piece of advice. Accom-. panying the letter was his son Douglas Allen Doolittle, now a freshman civil engineering major, and a second generation Sierra College student. Pp x SACRAMENTO: 4777 AURAN BLVD.
