David K. Nelson assumed the
position of Fire Management
Officer for the Tahoe National
Forest September 4, according
to an announcement made today
by Forest Supervisor Bob
Allison. :
Nelson was transferred from
the Big Bear District on the San
Bernardino National Forest in
Southern California where he
was District Ranger for the past
five years. Nelson is acquainted
in Nevada County having served
for a time as Assistant District
Ranger on the Nevada City
District.
Graduating in 1959 from Iowa
State University in Forestry, his
first assignment was Forester
on the Sacramento District of
the Shasta Trinity National
Forest. He later served at
Nevada City, then at the Northern California Smokejumping
Center in Redding, California
where he was Director, before
locating at Big Bear.

Many newcomers to
California over recent years
have not dipped into our
romantic and exciting history as
deeply as they might sometimes
be expected to ... if the letters we
receive here at the Nugget office
are any criteria. A recent and
most interesting inquiry came
from a new subscriber down in
the Los. Angeles area, who
requests ‘‘a handy capsule
account of the names of the
original 27. counties’ in
California, especially what
those names mean.”’
Using ‘‘Historic. Spots In
California” by Hoover Rensch
and Abeloe as our source, we
provide the following data for
our readers:
BUTTE COUNTY: Named for
the Sutter Buttes.
CALAVERAS: A _ Spanish
word meaning ‘‘skulls’’.
Derived from the river so
named by Gabriel Moraga on his
expedition of 1808.
COLUSA: Named for the
Colus Indians. Colus being a
corruption of the tribal name,
Korusi.
CONTRA COSTA: The name
signified ‘‘opposite coast’ as,
first applied to the entire cost
lying due east of San Francisco.
The significance was lost when
that portion directly facing San
Franicsco was transferred to
Alameda County later.
..EL DORADO: A Spanishterm meaning ‘‘the gilded one”’
deriving from the fact of the
discovery of gold there.
LOS ANGELES: The name is
Spanish and means ‘‘the
angels.”
MARIN: The name is believed
to be a corruption of ‘El
Marinero” or ‘‘the sailor’ and
was the name first given to a
Christian Indian who provided
service as a ferryman on the San
Francisco Bay prior to 1834.
MARIPOSA: Spanish for
“butterflies’’ and first used in
the plural ... Las Mariposas, for
a spot in Merced County visited
by the Moraga expedition in
1806.
MENDOCINO: The name first
applied to Cape Mendocino,
named in honor of Antonio, de
Mendoza, the first viceroy of
New Spain.
MONTEREY: A Spanish word
meaning ‘“‘hill’’ or ‘“‘wood of the
King”’ and honoring Gaspar de
Zuniga, County of Monterey,
viceroy of Mexico.
NAPA: The name of a tribe of
Indians, said to be the bravest of
all the California tribes. They
were almost completely wiped
out by smallpox in 1838.
SACRAMENTO Named for
the river so called. by the first
Spanish explorers of that region
in honor of the Holy Sacrament.
SAN DIEGO: Named for the
harbor that Vizcaino christened
in 1602. The name is Spanish for
St. Didacus, a native of Spain
and a Franciscan saint.
SAN FRANCISCO: Named for
the Spanish saint Francis.
Derived from Mission San

Franicsco de Asis, established
within the present boundary
lines of the city in 1776.
SAN JOAQUIN: Spanish for
St. Jochim and named by

Nevada City house fire
THE BONNER residence on Drummond Street in Nevada City was damaged by fire
of unknown cause Saturday night. The house is owned by Mrs. Edward T. Bonner,,
who resides in the bay area. The front portion and part of the interior were
damaged but the dollar amount is unknown. Spectators say Nevada City Fire
Department put down the blaze in record time.
