* August 27, 1973, hereby invites
_ the fiscal year ending June 30,
County names
(Cont. from Page 1)
named for the Santa Barbara
Channel, so called by Vizcaino in
honor of St. Barbara.
SANTA CLARA: Was named
for Mission Santa Clara,
established in that region in
1777.
SANTA CRUZ: Was first
known as Branciforte County.
Spanish for ‘‘Holy Cross.”
SHASTA: An_ apparent
corruption of the name of a tribe
of Indians living in the vicinity
of Mount Shasta.
SOLANO: Named in honor of
a prominent Indian chief of the
same name.
SONOMA: A name of Indian
origin and believed to have been
the name of a tribal chief
baptized by mission fathers in
1824.
SUTTER: Named to honor
General John A. Sutter.
TRINITY: Derived its name
from Trinidad Bay, which was
discovered by Captain Bruno
Heceta on Trinity Sunday in
1775.
TUOLUMNE: The Moraga
expedition came through this
region in 1806 and named both
the Tuolumne and Stanislaus
rivers. According to historian
Chapman, ‘“‘the Indian village of
» Tualamne, visited by this party,
is perhaps the origin of the
mondern name.”’’
YOLO: Or, ‘“‘Yo-doy” was the
name of a tribe of Indians and is
said to mean “‘a place abounding
with rushes.”’
YUBA: The name is believed,
by several authorities, to have
been the tribal name of one
group of Maidu Indians, the Yuba, who lived along the banks of
the Feather River near
Marysville.
So .there you have it, the
original 27 -counties of the
Golden State founded in 1850. A
later article, based on another
frequently asked question, will
provide the names and dates of
. the founding of the remaining 31
counties of California.
Weekend blazes keep Talls Pines
area firefighters busy
A rash of weekend fires kept
volunteer departments,
California Division of Forestry
and the Tahoe National Forest
on the go.
The CDF this morning
reported all burning permits
have been cancelled and personnel leaves have been cancelled because of unfavorable
weather and men and equipment on loan to fires out of the
county.
The CDF and 49er volunteers
put down an incendiary blaze at
Indian Flat off Highway 49 in the
area ofthe Willo about 10:30
Saturday morning.
Later in the morning CDF
rolled on a debris burn on the
Graniteville Road about a mile
and a half above the Columbia
Hill station. Despite a ‘“‘lively”’
north wind firemen were able to
control it quickly and lost just a
spot.of brush. Air tankers were
alerted but the ground crew
caught it before the tankers took
to the air.
CDF ‘‘chased smoke signals”’
on Banner Mountain Sunday. A
plane flew to spot fires reported
by the Banner Mountain
Lookout. However, the fires
proved to be ‘harmless and
legal” and caused by property
owners who had a fire going in a
fireplace on their property.
A blade struck a rock to spark
a fire when a resident of Indian
Flat was mowing grass Sunday
afternoon. The owner had a
sprinkler afid hose available and
had things pretty well under
control when CDF and the 49ers
arrived.
And then CDF and 49er fire
men combined to attack a blaze
off the North Bloomfield Road
near the nail factory. This one
was caused by a 4-wheel drive
vehicle pulling a shipping
container. The equipment got
stuck and heat from the
manifold started the fire. A
Tahoe Forest tanker and
helicopter flew on the blaze.
The Nevada City Fire
Department rolled on a house
fire at 332 Drummond Street late
Saturday night. The cause and
dollar damage is unknown at
this time. The blaze started in
the front portion and the front
and part of the interior were
damaged. The house, rented to
tenants, is owned by Mrs. Edward T. Bonner of the bay area.
Firemen from other departments assisted, A Nevada City
spokesman said.
CDF and Watt Park Saturday
combined to put down two fires
10 minutes apart on Old Auburn
Highway. The causes are not yet
determined. The first blaze was
in a spot of timber. The second
(unrelated to the first) started in
dry grass and was carried to 100
tons of stacked hay on the Ray
Conway property. The hay was
destroyed.
CDF cruised portions of Yuba
and Nevada counties Saturday
nightbecause wind was causing
arcing of tree limbs in power
lines. CDF acted as watchdog
until PGE crews arrived.
