TIMELY COMMENT, ,. Nevada County Planning Director
William N. Roberts showed us a copy of his home-town
paper the other day, the San Angelo (Tex.) StandardTimes. By coincidence that issue's editorial commented
on city planning and much of it is worthy of reprint:
"City and regional planning specialists are the first to
acknowledge that for a long time major planning in this
country was mostly a thing of paper promises, a fancy
9; given wide lip service but seldom converted into
act.
"But today the turning of urban and area plans into
action is beginning to be a reality in a good many parts
of the nation....
“Why the burst of activity and the big postwar trend
toward using plans instead of tossing them onto dusty
shelves?
_ “The main factor seems to be the startled awareness
of countless public officials that their communities, large
and small, are in for sweeping change --which they
must somehow governifthey donot want to be engulfed.
"Secondly, the very magnitude of the problem has
brought massive programs into being---urban renewal,
area redevelopment, highway network, school and hospital construction.
"If these projects are not in conflict and overlap, they
must somehow be fitted together. No one wants to see
repetition of such a case as occurred in the 1930s, when
a public housing project was begun and then torn down
to make way for a highway... ee
"Private industries and builders, too, see increasing
value in relating their efforts to some sort of general

OBLIGE, .John Vaughn of A to Z Supply ran across an
old letter (April 20,1922) sent by the superintendent of
the Sierra Gold Mining Company in Alleghany.. .The
letterhead spells it “Allegheny, California.” But the
postal authorities can find no place where it is listed
other than withthe "any" ending and point to three other
towns of the same name and same spelling across the
nation.. Apparently only the Allegheny River is spelied
with "eny” ending..eventhe writer spelled it properly
in his letter.

The Galleon, exclusive Alameda. restaurant "on the
Pacific Marina", has a new pamphlet describing the 13
banners designed by David Osborn and Charles Woods..
The Galleon Banners: 1. The northern lights and a midnight sun shine on a resting reindeer, designed after an
ancient Scythian medallion: 2. A giant Galapagos turtle ,
crowned and bejewelied, represents the wealth and
varied character of the Pacific and the lands it touches;.
3, A flamboyant peacock, alighting on a nest of parting
waves, calls forth rhe richness and beauty of the Middle
East; 4. Atlantis, the fabled city, is shown in an ocean
cavern, lit by a darkened sun, beneath a sunlit sea; 5.
A idyllic scene: a Chinese boat, mirrored in a calm sea,
calls to mind the exotic Orient; 6. The Indian Ocean is
represented by a richly patterned jewelled fish; 7. The
Black Sea isrepresented as a contemporary adaptation of
a richly ornamented Turkestan rug; 8, The North Sea is
represented by a stylized eagle wearing a breastplate
and a mantle of leaves---a derivation of an ancient
Teutonic medallion; 9. The Historic Mediterranean Sea
is completely surrounded by land and the countries it
touches are rich and varied; 10. Afleetingdeer, a midnight sun and a tall thistle---all taken from a Scandinavian peasant design, represent the Baltic Sea; 11.
The Blue Aegean, sea of the ancient Greeks, here is
symbolized by a chariot, pulled by rampant horses wearing elaborate feathered headdress; 12, A flaming sun,

Need for water on farms

the Seminar by fire authorities, rural safety experts,
insurance company executives and government officials who participated in
the discussions.
“A water reservoir is an
essential piece of farm safety
equipment. "Illinois Fire
Marshal William J. Cowhey
declared, "and if they can
