Six Deaths Are Caused
By Drinking Pesticide
. Within the last 15 months six California farm workers have
died because they drank a pesticide mistaking it for water or’
another beverage, says Les McCabe, Nevada County farm advisor.
Farmers and farm workers are urged never to place a pesticide in a container where it could be mistaken for drinking water

California Taxpayer Associations will hold a special board
meeting at the historic National
Hotel in Nevada City Sept. 30,
commencing ‘10 a.m, in the gold
banquet room, Several items will
be on the agenda pertaining to
recent state legislation, According to conference president
James Lenhoff, the proposed regional government for fifteen
northern California counties will
be discussed and acted upon.
Reports will also be heard from
member associations,
Resolutions will be presented
by several of the eleven county
association members, Among
the resolutions to be considered
is one demanding a complete
change in the present property
tax structure, Another calls for
all zoning to be restored to
approval by property owners instead of planning commissions,
A general easing of restrictive
building codes and road requirements has also been. called for.
A buffet lunch will be served
by the hotel, The meeting will
adjourn in the evening for a
cocktail hour and menu dinner.

Last year a farm worker who
was spraying the herbicide, Paraquat, died because he carried
two identical containers on: his
rig. One contained the herbicide,
the ‘other his drinking water.
He took a drink from the wrong
container. Recently, another
farm worker drank from a plastic Clorox-type container what
he thought was the drinking water his wife had prepared for him
to take to work, It acutally contained Parathion which a neighbor had given the wife for her
garden, (and illegal and very
hazardous used of Parathion),

in which an arsenical herbicide
had been mixed, Others have
_Gied in the past because they
drank from beverage containers,
such as milk cartons and soft
drink bottles in which poisonous
pesticides had been mixed,
It is very important never to
place any poisonous substance in
containers which could be mistaken for food or drink, Pesticides should be kept in their
original containers. When not in
use they should. be: under lock
and key away from food, beverages, or medicines, "Empty"
containers should never be discarded where others can use
them or children could reach
them. They should -be decontaminated, buried at an authorized dump, or burned.

Horsemen Hold .
Annual Ride
Forty riders on
horseback took part in
the llth annual Labor
Day trailride for Nevada County Horsemen,
Inc., accordingto
trail bosses Ken Maloney and Elton "Bub”
Tobiassen Tuesday.
The officers reported
at the last meeting of
the horsemen held at
Trail's End Clubhouse
and president John
Reedreported that the
event was financially
successful.
The ride began at the
camp at.Lake Van Norden Sept. 2 and the.
horsemen rode south,
through Mount Lincoln
Mount Disney, Crownest and Onion Creek
before returning to
camp for dinner.
Achuck wagoncrew,
consisting of Bob and
Mary Short, Lowell
and Roberta Williford
and Ken Fontz prepared the dinner.
Sunday, the group
journeyed to Cascade
Lake, Kid Lake, Palisades Lake and Ince
Lake and returned to
camp. ,
The ride scheduled
for Labor Day was
rained out, Reed said.
Defeat Incorporation
Truckee-Donner area voters
went to the polls last Tuesday
and defeated a proposal for incorporation of the area, The
proposition was defeated by 96
votes, 355 voters were against
the plan and 259 favored it,
The voter turnout was over 70
percent according to the county
clerk's office, Six-hundred and
fourteen out of 865 eleigible voters went to the polls,
Twenty candidates, including
four women, had filed for five
seats on the city, council if the
residents had approved the proposal,
* The question of incorporation
in Truckee had been voted upon
once before, in 1879, and stmmet
succeeded,
According to an accound in
Thompson and West's "History
of Nevada County," five trustees
a treasurer, assessor, and marshal actually were elected.
However, the legal minds of the
era decreed that the election did
not qualify under existing codes
and incorporation was not accomplished,
