a 8 The Nevada County Nugget.. Sept. 13, 1967 Chamber Value Questioned . The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, the city's investment in government bonds, the annual bicycle race and Fourth of July celebration and the city dump were among items discussed at the regular Tuesday meeting of the city council Monday night. Nevada City Mayor Arch Mc Pherson presided. The council also heard recommendations offered by Thomas H. Taylor, certified public accountant on the business ofrinning the finances of the city government. The group, uponthe motion of Councilman Bob Paine also paid tribute to the late Alvin Trivelpiece, newsman, who died Saturday. Councilman Paine, qualifying his remarks to the effect that "I have no criticism of the Nevada Chamber of Commerce, and I-Don't know whether I'm right or wrong, " asked the council toconsider, "whether ornotthe city can afford such luxury as a Chamber of Commerce.” Paine voiced his opinion that in the forming of an active county chamber that the city is duplicating #tself. He asked the mayor to appoint a committee to investigate the local chamber's activities to see if thes duplication is true. It was also noted at the session that many members are contemplating not rejoining the local group. Paine alsodiscussed the annual bicyclé race, suggesting that perhaps its popularity and value was diminishing and that a new "gimmick" be found that the Fourth of July Celebration and the bicycle race promotions had exhaused . themselves, and were an expense. Sunday's Constitution Day celebration was noted as a "great result in community participation with a minimum of expense." The active councilman then brought.up the subject of the city's investment in U.S. Bonds. "Iwould quarrel," Paine said, "with previous city councils who ‘invested in U.S. Bonds. It is not a good physical investment and not prudent to invest to recover money at the rate of 2 1/2 per cent, when ther are other means by which at least 5 per cent could be recovered. It was suggested that the city get rid of these bonds at the most opportune moment. However, it was noted that to get rid of them now would not be profitable as the discount base would eat up any profit. The auditors review and suggestions onrunning the city's financial problems handily reflected a good control of city government and and expenditures . It showed that the city council through its mayor was prudent and that the city's financial situation was in pretty good shape. Ae sick: In his review, @aylor suggested that inthe future in financing the proposed water system and parking that it was legally possible to include the preliminary expenses in the bond issue which have already been spent and thenreimburse the general fund. i He also suggested that the council should be advised who is overdue on his water bill, that not just a total of bills overdue be reported, but _that a confidential list of those persons delinquent be furnished to the council. The question of the present location of the city dump and the city's ownership of the site was also discussed, and a committee was namedto explore the situation and come up with recommendations before Jan. 1 of next year. In other action, the council adopted by roll call a resolution to increase the sewer charge to $7.50 quarterly, beginning Oct. 1. The council adjourned with a suggestion by councilman Paine to the memory and respect of the late Alvin Trivelpiece, for his valuable contributions to the community. , The is tteerented fn ih ‘Calling 265-2471, Colvin-Ramm United In .
