Winter, USN, son of Mr, and Mrs, William P, Winter of Grass Valley, and husband of the former Miss Kathline R. Briggs of Grass Valley, is in the Pacific serving aboard the anti-submarine warfare support aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. The aircraft carrier recently pulled out of drydock after comleting four months of extensive overhaul, While in the Pacific she will be _the command ship of a "hunterkiller" group specializing in anti-submarine warfare, breakdown in the report, His collegues, however, disagreed with: him and said that the information that they now receive~is sufficient, The controversy erupted after County Welfare Director Eugene Newman presented his monthly report on the increases or decreases in cases for each welfare category. It was then that Supervisor William Thomas indicated that he wanted a further breakdown, Thomas told the board that he would like to know the movement on and off each category-the number of person added during a month and the number taken off. The report presently does not do this but just lists a net increase or decrease, Supervisors Gene Ricker and Lou Hartman disagree, sayifg that this information Would be of no benefit to the board. Thus, Newman is unlikely to include the information asked for by Thomas but did promise to provide the information to him. The following caseloads were reported for the month of August: Old age security--822, up two; medical--138, up five; blind--20, no change; blind, medical--one, no change, Aid to need disabled --239, down two; medical--18, up two; general relief--none no change, Aid to families with dependent children--133 cases, down five; adults--128 persons, down fourchildren--344 persons, down 22; medical--34 persons, down three; families with unemployed fathers--nine cases, up. two; adults, 20 persons, up four; children--27 persons, down two. Steven Ryland of 334 Marshall St., Grass Valley, has been selected for technical training at Keesler AFB, Miss., as a U. Mr. Albert Johnson, president, conducted a lively meeting but highlight of the evening was the reenactment of Rough and Ready’s Secession from the Union by the Rough and Ready Players,.As Larry Filer, one of the miners, commented "the facts aré here ladies and gentlemen but we have taken certain liberties to make the whole episode into a brief and entertaining one," They-had and it was! The Massachusetts man as portrayed by Mary O'Neal sort of took your breath with his derby, fancy vest, good suit and gold watch and chain, John Kartozian, piano player, with the help of a beautiful bevy of "Saloon Gals," Henel Beatie, Dora: Grieme, Helen Avery, Maciel Filer, and Joan Mader brightened the Saloon Scenes up with such numbers as "Sweet Betsy," from Pike, "Clementine," "Bird in Gilded Cage" and "Hard Hearted Hettie the Vamp of Rough and Ready," The other miners in the saloon were William Thomas as "Whiskey Pete" victim of the Massachusetts man and a couple of genuine old miners, Helen Steele and Jim West, who made you wonder where the "pokes" of gold were hidden, Barbara Sailor portrayed Colonel Brundage with his high sounding Proclamations and last but not least was Ken Beatie as the friendly Barkeep.
