breakdown in the report, His
collegues, however, disagreed
with: him and said that the information that they now receive~is sufficient,
The controversy erupted after
County Welfare Director Eugene
Newman presented his monthly
report on the increases or decreases in cases for each welfare category. It was then that
Supervisor William Thomas indicated that he wanted a further
breakdown,
Thomas told the board that he
would like to know the movement on and off each category-the number of person added
during a month and the number
taken off. The report presently
does not do this but just lists
a net increase or decrease,
Supervisors Gene Ricker and
Lou Hartman disagree, sayifg
that this information Would be
of no benefit to the board. Thus,
Newman is unlikely to include
the information asked for by
Thomas but did promise to provide the information to him.
The following caseloads were
reported for the month of August:

Historical Society Meets
The Nevada County Historical Society met at the historic old
hall in Rough and Ready last week. Mr. Albert Johnson, president, conducted a lively meeting but highlight of the evening was
the reenactment of Rough and Ready’s Secession from the Union
by the Rough and Ready Players,.As Larry Filer, one of the
miners, commented "the facts aré here ladies and gentlemen but
we have taken certain liberties to make the whole episode into a
brief and entertaining one," They-had and it was!
The Massachusetts man as portrayed by Mary O'Neal sort
of took your breath with his derby, fancy vest, good suit and gold
watch and chain, John Kartozian, piano player, with the help of a
beautiful bevy of "Saloon Gals," Henel Beatie, Dora: Grieme,
Helen Avery, Maciel Filer, and Joan Mader brightened the Saloon
Scenes up with such numbers as "Sweet Betsy," from Pike,
"Clementine," "Bird in Gilded Cage" and "Hard Hearted Hettie
the Vamp of Rough and Ready," The other miners in the saloon
were William Thomas as "Whiskey Pete" victim of the Massachusetts man and a couple of genuine old miners, Helen Steele
and Jim West, who made you wonder where the "pokes" of gold
were hidden, Barbara Sailor portrayed Colonel Brundage with his
high sounding Proclamations and last but not least was Ken Beatie
as the friendly Barkeep. Charles Sailor set the scenes,
Refreshments were served by Mrs, Lisetta Scheave and her
two assistants Doris Bradley and Fay Dunbar from a table complete with Stage Coach and Oil Lamp, There were about 50 guests
and almost as many players, It was a most pleasant evening.
