4 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1972 reation. The AMTRAK train that starts south from the Los Angeles Union Station at;.8:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 29 will include two additional cars loaded with more than 100 boys and girls from economically depressed sections of the Los Angeles area. They will ride back to Los Angeles on the train in the evening. The program, which will continue on weekdays until the end of the school. vacation period, September 8, is planned to test the feasibility of starting a permanent recreationtrain program beginning with next-summer school vacation. Such a program may include other state beaches and parks and children from other areas of California. The State Department of Parks and Recreation will provide each facilities, including an interpretive program; AMTRAK will provide transportation from Los Angeles to the beach and return; and the U.S, Office of Economic Opportunity, along with community leaders, will arrage transportation from the community areas to the Union Station. Fundingfor the trial program will be provided through the Cffice of Economic Opportunity. The original suggestion for this program to provide the unusual combination of a train ride and beach recreation for urban area children was made by Parks and Recreation Director William Penn Mott, Jr., at a meeting with President Nixon at the Western White House near San Clemente. The President asked his staff to help get the program started. The Office of Economic Opportunity was designated to coordinate the effort in cooperation with the Community Action program. Evening voter registration There will be an opportunity for evening voter registration from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday at Seaman's Lodge, Pioneer Park, Nevada City. Volunteer deputy registrars will be available at that time to sign up new voters, young voters who will be 18 by Nov. 7, and voters who have moved and need to register at their current address. These will probably be the only evening registration hours during the current voter registration period and all those who cannot get to the court house during working hours are urged to avail themselves of this opportunity. Box 1034 Grass Vallev Ca.-Ph. 265-6166 1,750 students possible at NUHS, board told Attendance at Nevada Union High School on opening day reached 1682 and indicates over 1750 students will attend classes at the Ridge Road facility this year. Principal Art Hooper informed the NUHS trustees Tuesday night. A record freshman class of 486 assures continued high enrollment the next few years. Hooper reported 40 new students to the district on the first day of school. Peak attendance is expected later this month. The ''scramble" method of registration came off rather smoothly Hooper stated. This year the individual student made most of the class and teacher selecetions, similar to college registration, with assistance from counselors and parents, Superintendent Gerald Gelatt reported the final school budget at $1,991,146 and indicated he would seek additional funds for textbook purchases as that budget item now seems under financed. A conditional resolution was passed which authorized the superintendent to advance district funds upon the receipt of securities from Lakeworld, asubsidiary of Dart Industries, to finance the new swimming pool complex. The present financing plan places the high school district in full control of the construction. Approximately $200,000 worth of securities will be delivered by Lakeworld to the district within the week, They will be sold and the money place¢ in a special, interest-bearir fund. Bids will be then sought and construction scheduled as soon as possible. Preliminary plans must clear the state bureau of planning and an $800’ fee is required for processing. The district high school is now ready to proceed upon receipt of the securities. Jim Simmons, summer recreation director, reviewed the varied program offered at the NUHS sports facilities and was enthusiastic about the participation by ‘young and old, male and female throughout the summer, A breakdown on the activities and a projection for next summer by Simmons will be published later in The Union. In other board action: Approved and signed data processing contract with Sacramento to supply services for attendance, scheduling, grading and scholastic testing for 1972-73. Approved the resignation of veteran bus driver Ted Clark. Approved and signed necessary papers for the sale of the old Seven Hills School to the county.
