proposed in Grass Vak
ley Saturday night by
State Controller Alan
Cranston who said he
would stump throughout the state to gain
public support for the
proposal.
Cranston, who is
running for his third
term as controller, was

TheNevada City
Council, trying to get
work going again on
the floundering freeway, yesterday sent
off another pair of
telegrams to Gov.
Brown and State transportation chief,
Robert Bradford.
This time, the city
also brought the county into the picture
and yesterday got the
board of supervisors
toagree to send messages tothe officials asking for an
immediate meeting to

governor and to Bradford deploring delays
in the work and asking
for an explaination.
The following week

state engineers and
lawyers, including

The State Division of

take over the Nevada
City freeway job. If
all the pieces fall inthe foot of Broad Street in Nevada City points
to the posting notifying freeway contractor

take over the job in five days. The Division
of Highways is expected to take over the project today.

Sharp Quake
Rocks Homes In
Twin Cities Area
A rumbling, rolling
earthquake rattled the
Twin Cities area for
several seconds Monday morning, but damage in the area was
restricted mostly toa
few falling objects in
homes and businesses.

state posted a five day
notice stating that unless substantial progress was shown, the
state would take over.
Monday night, the
city council expressed
fears that any extended delays incompetion of the Nevada
City segment of the
job would not only do
more harm to the econ=omic life of the city,
but unless priorities
were established immediately to get cer=tain parts of the work
done, early heavy
rains, couldcause serious physical damage
to the town.
At the urging of City
Councilman Lob
Paine, the council
agreed tosend off
more telegrams to the
state. After adjourning the regular meeting Monday night, the
council frameda telegram for the governor
and Bradford and agreedthat Councilman
Paine and Joe Day,
Jr., should appear before the board of supervisorsyesterday
and that they send
similar messages and
put the resources of
the county Department
of Public Works on the
project tomake a sur=vey of project priorities,
