He's A Rolling, He's A Rolling The arm of the law is long in Nevada County. ; Robert M. Michelis, 21, of El Sobrante, discovered this last Friday when he found himself in Nevada Judicial District Court counting out and rolling 1,200 pennies. Michelis was cited on August 26 by Nevada City Police Chief Clarence Martz for making an improper turn at South Pine and Spring Streets, Michelis turned across traffic and his car was struck by another vehicle coming down the hill. He appeared before Judge Verle Gray in Nevada Judicial District Court the same day and entered a guilty plea. He was fined $12 and given until Sept. 1 to pay the fine. On that day a box containing a coffee can with 1, 200 pennies arrived from Michelis. Judge Gray wrote a letter back saying the method of payment was unacceptable. With the letter went an order for Michelis to reappear in court. Friday the young man appeared * and was ordered by the court to More than four million motor vehicles are scrapped every year in the United States. NEVADA TERRITORY 1862 Ed Snyder had left the California gold fields thinking of Nevada silver. The silver was an excuse. He just wanted to move on. He had never seen the desert country and his first view from the ‘eastern shoulder of the Sierra filled him witha deep-down feeling of satisfaction. Ed felt a kinship with this raw land and knew he'd found a home. Home forhimhad a new meaning now, ora more complete meaning, for it included the earth and sky as far as he could see. Snyder turned his gold into cattle and spent his days on horseback instead of digging into the earth. He explored the marvelous western.desert with a determination close to worship. One afternoon searching for cattle, he founda lake he'd never seen before. He was about 60 miles east of Carson City and four miles south of the Carson River. The lake was just a mile off the emigrant trail and showed signs of camping. The lake basin dropped nearly 200 feet from the
floor of the desert and was three miles in circumference. Rushes and willows were the only vegetation and they grew close to several fresh water springs. Ed thought the lake water saltier than the Great Salt Lake. Visiting a secondtime he brought with him 1500 feet of line to measure the depth but the line wasn't long enough. Camping beside the lake, he measured the movements of a tide whose ebb and flow covered two feet, Ed'stheory was that the inland lake had a subterranean connection with the Pacific ocean. He'd picked up sea shells on the great waterless desert. N othing was impossible in this fantastic country. He was neither startled nor frightened when the lake's monster appeared, Emigrants A Sea Monster In The Desert camped at the lake slaughtered one of their sheep and the giant serpent had risen out of the water toward the fresh kill. It was only out of the water a few seconds and then only part of its body was visible. Ed guessed they saw 60 feet of a possible 150. It was snake-like and dark with the white alkaline slime of the lake bottom washing overit. The serpent was frightened by the men and the wagon and disappeared leaving not a ripple on the water's surface. Ed found that the Indians of the area were frightened of the serpent and no longer gathered the eggs of ducks and geese layed in the rushes and tules. Nevada was indeed a marvelous place. Whatit had to offer in reality was nothing compared to its success as a stimulant tothe . imagination and its peculiar ability to slip its believers into a world of different dimensions, ' Portrait Special A Beautiful 8 X 10 or 11 X 14 LIFE SIZE MASTERCRAFT PORTRAIT 2 Big Days Only Fri. & Sat., Sept. 18, 19 11 a.m. 5:30 p.m. 96¢ For Each Person In Photo one of We have arranged to have ing photographers tobe in our store for 2 days only to photograph your favorite person or family group.
