The Anna never left port. She joined Bret Harte’s "Ships of 49" and today she is buried beneath Montgomery street where she was scuttled with many another. Rich was average height, with straight black and partially shaven beard, A widower in his early manhood with four children, he brought two of them with him to the golden state, He made many of the surveys of the water route and chiseled the legal claim: of the water rights into rock. The information gained by Rich prompted the men to form the company and proceed with construction. This was the start of the South Yuba Canal Company, which has been, and will be througiits successors, of untold benefit to this part of California as long as grass grows and water flows. Rich located water claims of the storage water in Devil's Peak lakes and Meadow lake, and superintended the construction of the Fordyce or Black Rock dam. The first dam was built in 1857 and the engineering was such that traces of it stands togay. . Capt. Kidd conceived the idea of bringing the waters of Donner lake into the system--an indication of the lack of knowledge of the topography in that day. Rich's exploration demonstrated the error of the plan.In 1850 Whartenby, Marsh and Dunn, and possibly others, built a ditch from Rock creek to Sugar Loaf. At the same
time Kidd and Knox built a ditch from Deer Creek to Gold Flat. In 1853 Rich and others built a ditch from Rock Creek to Sugar Loaf a little above the Whartenby ditch and also began the Snow Mountain ditch at Nevada City end to supply the rich and extensive mines on the slopes below Sugar Loaf, appropriating water supplies ‘available as they were reached. The ditch was intended to extend to Deer Creek but finally terminated at Cold Spring canyon. The water rights were held in the order of the construction of the ditches and limited to their capacities. Sometimes ‘even in wet weather there was not sufficient water to supply all ditches and friction resulted as water meant money. Despite occasional fights no one was killed and eventually the companies consolidated into the South Yuba Canal Company. Following consolidation and inthesum_ mer of 1854 a new ditch was started below the Snow Mountain ditch as the original survey of it indicated that if completed to Deer Creek would tap the stream too high. The new ditch 2 1/2 feet wide and 2 feet deep, tapped Deer Creek at the forks. The building of the South Yuba Canal tad “mga upon during the winter of Our big one: Caprice . Monte Carlo.
