ae Chamber e e Tidbits We commend Bill Lambert . and the Masons for their finest Constitution Day parade and celebration to date. The larger crowd was genuinely enthusiastic abtout the excellent entries, the elegant costumes and the fine speaker, Lt, Cmdr. Ted Robinson. The current Miss Sacramento, Polly Ann Houghton, later drew the ticket for the Miner's Hospital afghan winner, We are proud to have helped a little on the big day for Nevada City. We are now moving on toward the Gold Mine Tour on October 4, and the chamber rummage sale on the 3rd and 4th. On the eveing of the 2nd, there will be a preview and silent auction of special items that are being donated by dignitaries from Nevada county and points beyond. Senator Stephen Teale sent us a pair © of cuff links with the senate seal and his name. The public will be invited to come between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m. to view these items, (some of which will be humorous), and bid in writing. The highest bidder on each will receive the object, Entries are being returned for the coming Trade Fair, scheduled for October 11, in the Veteran's Building. If you are adept in any kind of creative handwork, and it can be anything from art to cooking, --write the chamber for an entry blank. Already there are some new entrants who will be offering some novelties for sale that can be used for hoiday decorations and gifts. Our representative director from PG&E, Ken VanGundy, has been transferred to the Auburn office, therefore must resign from our board, His replacement will be Tom Powers. Time is approaching to begin thinking of our annual F'all Color Spectacular, Leaves are drifting down one by one, and already some trees are showing color. There will not be a photo contest this year, but we will display any photos that local photographers care to lend us for a time. The Spectacular will formally open on October 11, when autumn beauty should be in its prime. 3 in . simplicity Shee BERGEMANN & SON uneral Chapel ready to serve you. ’ day or night Call 265-2421 BOST AVE. OFF LOWER GRASS VALLEY ROAD, NEVADA CITY 8 The, Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, September 17, 1969 Help you , aa Safety Patrol c@ WINNER, POSTER CONTEST TRAFFIC SAFETY School safety patrols help reduce accidents Since 1922 when the School Safety Patrols began their job of protecting children at street crossings, the traffic death rate of school-age chilfren in the United States has decreased nearly one-half, while the death rate for all other age groups has more than doubled. This year the more than 900,000 boys and girls of the Patrol are on duty at crossings near more than 40,000 schools across the nation and they need a helping hand to carry on their job of safeguarding youngsters ontheir way to and from school, says the California State Automobile Association, Parents are urged to teach their children to show cooperation and respect for their school safety patrols, and adults should also remember to demonstrate the same spirit of cooperation. School Safety Patrols play a major role inreducing accidents among school-age children and should be praised for their outstanding job of protecting the nation's younger generation, As part of AAA's nationwide school traffic safety education program, this poster is being distributed to all parts of the country. ae Benady eT wer ee By Fay M. Dunbar 273-2934 I was canning peaches yesterday when our neighbor Mrs, Sue Fay of Hilaire acres dropped by to return some empties — fruit jars, of course—from last years canning. It's nice to have neighbors who do this. When your fruit jar supply begins to run low you realize how bottling companies must feel each summer when they need their bottles most and everyone is too busy to remember to return empties. The 'no return’ bottles would be nice if so ‘many of them didn't end up in our front pasture thrown carelessly from passing cars. Mrs, Fay was telling me what a joy their Labor Day weekend was, except for the crowds, She and daughter Pam with Pam's friend Helen Dargie took advantage of Sues holiday from the hospital and went on a little camping trip. They had a wonderful ride through the high country around Yuba Pass and then camped at Fiddle Creek Campground, While the young ladies played and swam, Sue did a little gold panning. Her efforts were rewarded with lots of color “and two small nuggets, . They had such a wonderful time that they have decided to spend at least one day of each of our glorious autumn weekends picnicking or camping. Happy reso> lution for all of us. * * My own yard is beginning to hint at fall. The liquidamber is sporting a few colored leaves and the virginia creeper has a gorgeous red spray here and there. The devil grass loves the weather, too, I guess it's having its last fling before the summer ends, Too bad it can't be its final fling tho’ the livestock do Beef meeting Saturday CowBelles and cowmen will gather at Gene Holmes' Oak Meadows Ranch in Nevada county for the fall Field Day, Saturday. The plums, plus some our neighbors, the Lester Hickles'’ gave me, are made into jam. .The cellar won't be bare this winter. * * * Mr, Phillip Parry, our neighbor, seems to enjoy this weather, too. We hear him working in his shop early and late, Mr. Parry builds stagecoaches and they are beauties, too. When Mr, Parry and Italkit's usually about weeds or irrigation (our pastures adjoin). Mr. Parry at one time actually drove a stagecoach over a 90-mile route between Twin Falls Idaho and Jarbidge, Nevada, What fascinated me most was the Harness Bells, Mr. Parry isastickler for detail. He does every single bit of the building himself. He does the leather, including harness, and metal work himself as well as the necessary wood work. He had the harness bells especially cast to get exactly the right tone. He has a stagecoach and apfairie schoon_er under construction at the present time. He loves to have really interested people visit his shop. Mr. Parry raises horses and donkeys on his ranch on Rough and Ready Road just as a little extra hobby. The Parrys are retired and came here from Susanville. Mrs. Parry's hobby is hand dyed and hand made wool rugs. * ok The formation of a Western Nevada County Recreation District affects us all. We all want to hold, for public use, at least a little of the pleasant waterways and the beauty that surrounds our homes and our lives here today. It's worth the very small cost of a recreation district just to protect the remainder of these pleasant spots around us. Give it a little thought. You may want to show up at the next hearing, * * * The use permit application for a 12-unit small-farm type vacation resort just past the end of Rough and Ready Road was found to be in conflict with the general plan for this area and was denied. The neighbors who appeared were gratified, Our planning commission deserves a vote of confidence, ‘* ok Mrs, Bea Mackey has sold her home off Rough and Ready Road and moved into downtown Rough and Ready, She recently retired and doesn't want to be tied down with a lot of responsibilities and work. She plans a trip to visit her daughter in THE BEST MOVE OU EVER MADE 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE TRAP We Os Fone “Seattle as soon as moving day is over. * OK Constitution Day is actually today, September 17, The builders of this document would turn over in their gravesifthey could see how we've twisted their simple beautiful good intentions to fit our selfish purposes. In an old boo, Your Rugged Constitution by Bruce and Esther Findlay, our Constitution is referred to as “A House of Freedom for the United States.'"' The 38 men, representatives of 12 colonies (Rhode Island sent no delegate), started early in 1787 with the idea of adapting the Articles of Confederation of our early colonies. To quote our authors about the 13 colonies, "It was an imperfect league of friendship among 13 semi-independent states. . Instead of working together, as a team, the states of ten pulled in different directions." It must have been something like the U.N, in a mild sort of way. So they gave up the Articles and came up with this document, perfect in its intentions if sometimes imperfect in its allowances for our use of it. It was ratified by all 13 states though ratification by only nine would have made it the law of our land. The actual building of the new government. began in the spring of 1789 when George Washington was inagurated the first president. * ee Bud and Dora Cannon. of San Jose spent last weekend visiting the Jack Bixlers, ae ok Christmas is coming. Mrs. Martina Paull has received her first collection of Christmas cards. Martina won't be home for Christmas this year unless the Oak Park Nursing Home becomes her (new) home. She is feeling and looking just fine and would love to have visitors, * The Rough and Ready 4-H Club is beginning its 1969-70 activities, It will arrange the county activities for 4-H week beginning October 6. Mrs, Joan Mader is chairman of Rough and Ready Club's Display window for the event. Mrs. Lolamae Tinsley and Mr. George Small are adult community advisors, A parents’ meeting was held last week but another meeting will be necessary to conclude the year's plans, I still have only a partial list of district fair entries and awards for our 4-H club youngsters, Mark Tinsley won a blue ribbon for his bookcase and a red for his saw horse in the woodworking division, Cinthia Tinsley, club president, won a blue for her dress inthe clothing division and a white for her pineapple upside down cake in the food preparation division, Pam Fay won a blue for her skirt and blouse and a red for her clothing bag in the ABC's of clothing. Sharon Mader who won a blue for her three-piece outfit at the 4-H Dress Review, was too late with her entry and had to put it in the senior division, Tyera Lee, publicity chairman, has promised me more winners later,
