There are in Nevada county several dangers to animal health which can be avoided, with little expense, by taking the proper precautions. ‘ Heartworm disease, which can be contracted by dogs, has become prevalent in the county over the _pastfew years. The problem here is one of the worst in California, according to Dr. Patrick Donaghey, a local veterinarian who specializes in the treatment of small animals. Once attached to the heart and pulmonary arteries the worms grow to up to 15-inches in length. In most cases it takes two or three years for the heartworm disease to be noticeable. In most cases the: dog will die if the disease goes untreated for this long. Heartworm disease can be detected in its early stages by a blood test which costs $5 at most veterinary clinics. If the results of the test are positive treatment is possible, and inmost cases successful. If the test is negative, there is an oral medicine available that will prevent the infection. It is advisable to use it during the mosquito season. ; ie Dr. Donaghey, who has kept a chart of the infection by area in Nevada county over the past three years, reports the disease most prevalent in the Cedar Ridge, Banner Mountain and Deer Creek near Nevada City areas. If the disease goes untreated in dogs the chance of it spreading are great. Once infected a dog will carry the worm microfilariae in its bloodstream. This initial form of the worm will be ingested by mosquitoes and the life cycle will begin in other dogs. There is another danger to animals in Nevada county which horse owners should be particularly aware of. Yellow star thistle, which grows in abundance along the fence lines of some fields, is deadly to horses. When eaten in small amounts the weed is harmless, according to a local veterinarian. If, however, a horse is allowed to eat large amounts of star thistle he will become addicted to it and want to eat nothing else. The countywide spaying program which offers animalneutering and spaying at a discount price, is now in effect. They advise it be used. ‘Spay and neutering tickets are available at the courthouse in we Nevada City’s Constitution Day YELLOW THISTLE can be a real health hazard to Nevada county animals, especially horses.
