ADVENTURES of a YOUNG
Scenic Roads
MARYSVILLE---A workshop
meeting to discuss the proposed California ScenicHighways System will be
held in the Marysville city
council chambers September
25 beginning at 10 a.m.,
according to officials at the
State Division of Highways
Marysville district office.
The meeting is being conducted so that interested private and governmental groups
in the 11-county north valleymountain highway district
may participate in final studies for the system.
The workshop will be under the direction of members
of the Interagency Coordinating Committee for Scenic
Highways, established during the 1961 general legislative session. It includes
the heads of the State Office
of Planning and the Departments of Public Works, Parks
& Recreation, Conservation,
and W ater Resources. This
group was assisted by a sevenman citizens’ advisory committee.
NEW TREND?
The workshop, one of 11
tobeheld throughout the
. State during September and
. October, is to enable inter. ested groups to present their
' Opinions of the preliminary
report submitted last spring,
and to suggest additions or
deletions to the proposed
system, A final-report is to
be prepared by March 15.
Interested individuals who
. wish to study the preliminary
report or offer suggestions
should contact their local
. governing body --either their
city council or planning
commission, or their county
board of supervisors or plan*
ning commission,
The interdepartmental
committee was charged by
the State Senate "to make
recommendations on 1) the
state highway routes which
should be designated as scenic highways, 2) criteria for
their development, and 3)
related actions necessary to
accomplish the broader scenic conservation objectives
inherent in the development
of a state-wide system of
scenic highways, "
A "scenic highway" is defined in the report as one
which "traverses an area of
outstanding scenic quality,
the location and design of
which will receive special
analysis for the pur pose of
enhancing the motorist's
scenic experience,”
The "scenic corridor” concept, as developed in the
preliminary plan, concerns
“that part of the landscape
abutting a highway route
w hich contains outstanding
views, flora and geology,
and other unique natural attributes and historical and
cultural resources affording
pleasure and instruction to
the highway traveler, "
The initially proposed
scenic highways were selected on the basis of five general criteria: 1) the intrinsic
scenic values and experiences the route would provide,
2) the diviersity of these experiences, 3) the degree to
which the route would link
specific points or areas of
scenic, historical, orrecreational interest, 4) the relationship to urban areas for
short trips, and 5) opportunities for bypassing major
traveled routes.
