Much is being written about the
So-called new breeds of beef
cattle being introduced into the
United States today.
William E, Mason, Placer and
Nevada counties' farm advisor,
reports there is a tremendous
increase in the numbers of exotic breeds of cattle coming into
North America via Canada, Such
names as Charolais, Simental,
Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Lincoln
Red, Black Welsh and Murray
Gray are now commonly used
and understood by cattlemen
throughout the country, All of
these breeds of cattle originated in Western Europe with the
exception of the Murray Gray
which was developed in Australia,
Not so familiar to cattlemen
are newer exotic breeds such
as the Fleckviah, Gelbvieh, Pie
Rouge, Blond d' Aquitaine, and
Chianina, They are just now
starting to make their way to
North America,
Many people are asking. -why all the excitiement about
the new breeds when we have
many outstanding cattle among
the "old" established beef cattle breeds in this country. These
include the. Angus, Hereford,
Shorthorn, Red Poll, Devon, Galloway, and Scotch Highland cattle, In addition we have the Holstein and Brown Swiss, which
have been primarily developed
as dairy cattle breeds, but are
also used quite extensively as
beef breeds,
Tahoe -Donner
ahead of —
schedule
Construction of winter recreational facilities are proceeding 20 per cent ahead of schedwe at Tahoe Donner, the $24
million four seasons resort
community in the High Sierra
now under development by
Lakeworld, a division of Dart
Industries Inc,
"The ski complex and public
lodge are now scheduled for
completion by Thanksgiving,"
according to Fred Damavandi,
director -of development for
Tahoe Donner. "The opening
dates were originally set for the
Christmas holidays or later."
Damavandi added that the Tahoe Donner Lake Beach Club
will be the first facility to be
finished, with its opening scheduled for the end of September.
The Northwoods Clubhouse and
Recreation Center is on schedule as well, with its completion
date slated for Dec, 31.
The 4,020-acre resort living community is two_miles from
Donner Lake and 16 miles north
of Lake Tahoe, Residential sites
vary in size from one-third acre
to five acres and are priced
from $9,000, _
The 220-acre ski complex
area has been cleared and work
has begun on construction of two
double chair lifts.
Framing of the two-story ski
clubhouse is finished and framing of the Tahoe Donner Lodge,
within the ski area but not part
of the complex, is also completed,
At the beach club on Donner
Lake the beach area itself and
use, :
The "name of the game" among
many commercial cattlemen
today is crossbreeding and this
is where the exotic breeds are
entering into the scheme, Animal scientists throughout the
United States ‘and Canada are
making breed comparisons as
rapidly as possible. There is
still a great deal to learn about
these new breed imports, Undoubtedly some of them will
perform very well and meet the
demands of the present day beef
cattle industry in the country,
On the other hand, our older
established breeds have the ability to compete with the best of
the newer breeds,
