Operation Identification fights burglaries
Cattle ranchers brand their
livestock for identification and
protection and soon Nevada
Cityans will be able to employ:
a similar process to identify and
protect their valuables,
The Nevada City Business and
Professional Womens Club has
launched "Operation Identification here. The program, designed to reduce burglaries and
thefts was introduced in 1963
in Monterey Park by its chief
of police, Edward F. Holladay.
The results of the program
reportedly have been startling
in Holladay's city of 50,000,
There were
which participated which have
had only three burglaries since,
In the 7,000 non-participating
homes, more than 1,800 burglaries were reported. Home
southern
California communities employing Operation Identification are
said to have been reduced dramatically by this "simple and
inexpensive method.
The plan works like this:
— Engrave your driver's license number on your valuable
possessions that burglars find
most appealing — television
sets, radios, stereos, tape recorders, bicycles, cameras,
typewriters, electric tools,
jewelry, musical instruments,
— Put stickers (which will
be furnished) on your home's
front door. and other obvious
places advising potential thieves
that "all items of value on these
premisés have been marked for
ready identification by law enforcement agencies," .
This helps foil a thief in three
ways: If he is stopped by police
with marked items in his possession he can't readily convince officers that they belong
to him; Possessions easily idenChuck Murray

cool to the items; the thief
gets stuck with goods when he
really wants money; the stickers may discourage a thieffrom
breaking in at all.
"The key to success is for a
large number of citizens in a
community or area to participate so thieves will know they
are operating in dangerous ter-ritory," participating officials
say.
The etching tool is available
for use of local residents and
stickers reading "We have joined Operation Identification", and
carrying the seal of the Nevada
City Police Department, will be

the Nevada City Police Department between 1: and 5 p.m.

who wish to borrow the tool
may sign it out, mark their
valuables and return the. tool

The local BPWC has been
working on the project for some
‘time and to date has invested
more than $300 on the protection project, club members said,
Clara Peterson, civic participation chairman, is in charge
of the project,
"It's a very good thing and
will be helpful in law enforcement, -When we pick up an article believed to have been stolen
we can find out in minutes who
it belongs to by contacting offi_cials in Sacramento, I believe
it will reduce burglaries and
thefts," Nevada City Police
Chief ‘Jim Moon said,
There is no charge for the
protective measures, but Mrs,
Peterson said the club will accept donations to increase the
program,

The same as here. And that’s the
truth.
Only one thing i is different. The
penalties are stiffer. In Lebanon, for
Instance, possession gets you 3 to'5

That's why there are over 700
