8 The Nevada County Nugget: Wednesday, September 24, 1969 Art of splitting sugar pine shakes revived here The almost forgotten art of splitting sugar pine shakes was revived here recently when the Washington Ridge Youth Conservation Camp split shakes for the Bridgeport covered bridge. Nevada county's representa tive to the California Assembly, Gene Chappie, arranged for the shipment of sugar pine from the Calaveras Big Trees area. The boys ‘at camp brushed up on her history and flexed their muscles to make shakes from the sugar pine bolts. Archie Landsburg, a veteran of the craft who with his father practiced it in an earlier era, came from his North Bloomfield home to show the younger generation "how it is done."’ Dale Berger, forestry foreman, directed the operation. Museums furnished patterns for ancient tools which are no longer produced. The youths fashioned a mallet from an Oak limb, The froe (the cutting tool) was made at Black Bart's shop in Grass Valley. Shakes are created by attacking the bolt, a piece of sugar pine that is 32 inches long and six inches thick. The mallet is swung on the froe, which in turn splits the bolt. "The boys are enthusiastic about the project,” said Ed Schukert, forestry superintendent. He added that the youths thrive on diversified work, and problems arise when they become bored with too much ofthe same type of work.
