4. The Nevada County Nugget Wed., SGT. STRIPES..FOREVER : September 24, 1975 by Bill Howrilla What practical jokers lack most is a sense of humor. Where would the cranberry business be without Thanksgiving? There’s no one more smug than the guy next in line, waiting for you to catch up on your part of the job. Wearing bifocals wouldn’t be so difficult if they didn’t keep moving the curbs. READS YOUR STARS If you were born September 24-30: You are a lover of beauty and are likely artistic. BY DR. JAMES G. PRICE cational Q. Yesterday I went to my doctor and instead of seeing him, I saw his ‘‘physician’s assistant.” I’d like to know a little more about this type of person — is he a doctor in — what is he allowed to do, and how far can I trust im? A. Your question covers a lot of ground, but I’ll do my best to tell you about physician’s assistants. They are not doctors, and most of them make this fact quite clear to the patients they see. They work under the direction of a doctor and usually have about three years of specialized medical training in preparation. Most of them limit their activities to the more common and simple type of care, such as baby checks, respiratory infections, and minor trauma. The doctor who employs them is responsible for their work and most often frequent checks are made between the P.A. and the doctor to monitor the assistant’s activities. Wise use of a P.A: can extend the amount of
work which a doctor can handle, since he’ll be spending less of his time with routine, uncomplicated matters. Most states don’t allow the P.A. to write prescriptions or to practice by himself. The actual concept isn’t new at all — sinee most of us have for years trained our office personnel to do much the same sort of work. As to the question of how far he can be trusted, I’d say that this is directly related to how far you can trust your doctor. Almost all P.A.’s are conscientious capable people who work within and recognize their limits. P.A.’s and other physicain aidés such as nurse practitioners are a product of the last several years where the numbers of physicians available to deliver day to day pore. 0 people has been considerably less than the demand. The total effect of these aides has been to provide at least a portion of good medical care in many areas and ° many people who would have otherwise been without Ha i rary : Questions to, YOUR. Secrets in the wind could get blown into the open. Matters on the home front don’t meet entirely with your approval. Straighten them out now. LEO (7/21-8/22): Week gets off to a bumpy start, Leo. Remember the word ‘‘compromise.” A hidden situation could go even more underground. A sunny close. SAGITTARIUS (11/23-12/21): Attention to duty should begin your week. A person with a big mouth could tell a secret you'd rather not be told. Then, plans may come to a screeching halt, as more time is needed for them to work out. . CAPRICORN (12/22-1/19): Romance lifts off your week. An unexpected obstacle is opportunity in disguise. Hurt feelings may need bolstering. Lend a hand. Finally, the chance to begin a friendship don’t miss it! AQUARIUS (1/20-2/19): Focus on affairs at home, with a few changes to be expected. Cupid gets a green light and zooms in; love life sparkles. Then, it’s a question of work or worry. Do the former and you won't have to do the latter. PISCES (2/20-3/20): A. Taurian friend may turn to you for advice. Easy does it.
