Nevada Union bus Thé Nevada Union High School District has a busing problem. Unlike many districts, where the problem stems from the color of the faces on the bus, Nevada Union’s ‘problem is the amount of time some students spend on the bus. The amount of miles the buses travel and resulting cost also concern’ the Board of Trustees. a Dick Bell, who is in charge of the county bus pool, told the board at Monday’s regular meeting that the Washington area has a big problem right now. The bus leaves Washington-at 6 a.m. and returns about 6 p.m. This means the eight students from Washington spend approximately four and one-half hours on the bus every day. ; A large part of this time is spent riding further east on Highway 20 where the bus must make stops in the Omega Mine and Lake Spaulding areas to pick up four more students. Bell said that when snow falls the students will spend an even longer time on the bus because it must travel to the Highway 80 junction in order to turn around. The cost to run the bus on its route from Washington to the area above amounts to nearly $6,000 a year. according to Bell. He therefore asked the board to consider an alternate mode of travel for the students in the Spaulding area. One that would save the district money and save the Washington students an hour every day. Bell suggested that the board pay the parents of the students who live above Washington 14 cents a mile to deliver their children to the nearest bus stop. In this case that would be Highway 20 at the Washington turnoff. Richard Schneider, who conducted the meeting in the absence of Board President R. Peter Ingram, said that the board would have to obtain information from the parents involved in the busing change before they could ° reach a decision. He said the board would like nothing more than saving $6,000 a year and at the same time help the students. Some of the parents from the affected area were present at the meeting. They indicated that a problem may arise when heavy snow falls. The board agreed to consider the problem in the next two weeks and put it on the agenda of the next regular meeting. Another transportation problem was brought to the attention of the board by vice-principal Clay Sumrell, He said that a serious traffic jam develops each morning and afternoon when parents attempt to deliver and pick up students in front of the school. To avoid the problem Sumrell suggests that parents do not attempt to enter the parking lot but drop off the students on Ridge Road and have them walk to the buildings. “J don’t know why they want to drive into this mess anyway,” Sumrell said.
