Page 10..Wednesday, September 26, 1962..The Nevada County NUGGET ROMANTIC MISTLETOE Mistletoe is said to make boys bold and girls blush. That's the romantic side of it. But insome regions of the world the parasite is known as a genuine menace, according to Dr, John Parmeter, assistant professor of plant patholoyy on the University . of California's Berkeley campus. Parmeter's main interest is in a particularly destructive group called the dwarf mistletoes, which are serious pests of western coniferous . forests, Each year these parasites cause untold losses in volume of timber and quality of lumber, These plants have little resemblance to the leafy Christmas mistletoes. The dwarfs have no leaves, only short shoots, from one inch tosix inches long, ordinarily TSM DALKGHTERIN-LAWS . They literally shoot their way through the forest. When the dwarf mistletoe fruit is ripe the casing is ruptured from its base, leaving one end of the sac Open. Then an explosion takes place, andthe expelled seed follows a trajectory like LT his-Little-PiggyWent-to-Market Sale/ Canned Morrell Pride. Ordinarily, the tiny projectile first strikes the needle of a nearby tree. There it holds fast because of a small amount of sticky material it carries, In order to cause an infection inthe new host the seed must somehow manage to leave the needle and reach CY al a favorable position on the the branch, After a rain, a viscous coating on the outside of the seed begins to swell and becomes slimy. This allows the seed to slide . down toa place where it can establish its destructive residence, The following spring, when the seed germinates, a priMary rootlet, or infection peg, begins to force its way Poppy Brand, Genuine Beltsville birds averaging 5 to 8 Ibs. Stuff ’em, truss ’em up and stick into the tender bark of the tree. Once underneath the bark, the infection peg branches outinto the host tissue. This root-like process is the means by which the young mistletoe draws its nutrient fromthe victimized tree. Sometime later, the mistletoe produces crops of tiny aerial shoots, These are difficult to see at first; but after the infection is ten or AS KISS OF DEA’ twelve years old there may be clumps of shoots the size of a large softball, or even a volleyball, Once established, the misletoe will live on for the lifetime of the tree, and many individual infections are over a hundred years old. Thus, mistletoe is not primarily a killer. It doesn't do its damage sensationally, like fire or ravaging insects, ‘Turkeys Pork Steak Fine for an old Spare Ribs Lean, flavorful Ground Beef Beef Liver Sliced Bacon Buttes 1-1b pig 65¢. Rather it drastically reduces the growth of trees by feeding off their lifeblood, Where mistletoe infestation is extremely heavy, says Parmeter, tree growth may virtually cease, Another important source of loss is the poor quality of wood produced, When mistletoes infect trees they often cause "witches broom” abnormally bushy, heavy branches, What the forester w ants is a nice, clean trunk, and he wants it as high as: possible sohe can get good logs, But with heavy mistletoe infection he gets just the opposite persistent branching resulting in knotty wood, Oftentimes the infection comes down the branch and into the main stem where it causes a canker or a weakened spot on the tree trunk. At the point of infection the trunk of some tree species may swell to nearly twice the normal diameter. The swollen section is difficult to saw and often has to be cut out entirely. Furthermore, says Parmeter, a 50 cr 60-year-old trunk canker provides an ideal entry point for destructive decay fungi. These organisma enter at a place where the bark has been split by swelling. Once underneath the protective bark, the fungi proceed torota little section out of the middle of the trunk. Such a weakened spot easily gives way to a strong wind. Though a dwarf mistletoe invasion is not rapid, it is steady andsure, When it becomes established in a timber stand, it's there to stay unless some factor works against it. Researchers are studying the possibility of an eradicant spray that would kill mistletoe without damaging the tree. So far, no such chemical hasbeen found. But Parmeter is hopeful. "It's like looking for a cancer cure," he says. “Everyone assumes that somewhere there's a drug or chemical that will combat cancer. I have the same faith that somewhere there is a compound to do the job on mistletoe, It may take years or even decades to find such a compound, It's a matter of chance. " Meanwhile, UC plant pathologists are trying to locate some weak spot in the life cycle of the dwarf mistletoe. Perhaps the cycle can be broken at the point of pollination. Mistletoes have male and female flowers, Every indication suggests that insects are the pollinators, crawling on the male plants and taking the pollen to the female plants. If this could be interrupted, the problem might be solved, In any event, somewhere in the hundreds of factors affecting the mistletoe 's growth, researchers are confident of finding one that can be manipulated in such a way as to break the cycle and stop the disease.
