Lone Grave
Monument
To Pioneer
By the side of Highway 20
seven miles east of Nevada
City isthe well kept grave of
a little boy, Folks call it the
Lone Grave.
Julius Albert Apperson died
May 6, 1858, aged two years,
two months and twenty five
days, He was buried among
the tall trees near the old
Washington Road,
Why was little Julius buried
in such a lonely spot?
Legendhasit that the Appersons were members of a
wagon train bound from the
east to the gold fields of
California and that the little
boy became ill and died en
route.
It seems strange that the
child would be buried in the
w oods-so close to a town
which had the facilities for
a proper burial including a
cemetery.
It also seems strange that
a wagon train leaving the
east would be in California
in early May. It usually took
three to four months to make
the trip across the plains. It
is not uncommon to find deep
snow in the mountain passes
as late as June.
It is doubtful that any
wagon train ever left the east
inJanuary which is the time
they would have hadto leave
inorder to be in Nevada
County in early May.
The Nevada Democrat
(Nevada City, California) for
Wednesday May5, 1858,
carried the following story:
"Sad Accident---A little boy
aged about two years, a son.
of Mr. Apperson, who resides
at the Spring Hill House on
Washington road, wasterribly burned last Friday evening. He was playing near
the house with some other
children, who had built a
fire. He had on a pair of loose
pantaloons, and in passing
round the fire the left leg of
the pants took fire, and the
children were unable to put
