SHOULD CROSS THIS BRIDGE
BEFORE WE GET 10 IT
_ Thecurrent project to bring a portion
of the Penn ValleyBridgeport-French
Corral road up to federal secondary road
standards serves to remind us that the
_ fate of the covered bridge at Bridgeport
will be decided in the not too distant
future. :
It should already be an established
policy of the county to preserve the
historic structure. .
But since that policy has not been
spelled out, a decision on the fate of
the bridge will likely hang fireuntil
such time as a future Federal Aid Sec_ondary road project forces determination
of the bridge's fate under unnecessary
pressures.
This is the proper time for citizens
in Nevada County, individually and
through their organizations, to demand
that the county Board of Supervisors
establishas policy the preservation of:
the bridge.
Indeed, the preservation of the
covered bridge at Bridgeport is of in*
terest toall Californians . Once Nevada
County supervisors establish a policy
to preserve the bridge there will be numerous state-wide organizations that
will join in supporting that policy on
the state level. :
We have learned that history has a
value in Nevada County. Let's "bank"
this bridge's value now by establishing
preservation as county policy.
DESOLATION DRIVE FITS”
SPRAY AWAY POLICY
It hardly seems worth the effort.
But everytime we see the corridors of
desolation that are caused by the
county's program of "spray and away"
along our county roads, then we doa
slow burn.
They spray, then they go away--and they leave behind an ugly, deso_late corridor which they ignore until
time to spray again next year.
Nevada County residents are forced
to participate in a spray form of Russian Roulette. Which road will next
face the spray gun? And the "game" is
as deadly tothe beauty along our roads
as the real thing is deadly to humans,
for the chamber fires spray at someone's special scenic site in Nevada
County each time it is aimed.
County residents oppose this spray
program. Why don'tthe supervisors set
up ‘hearings before they authorize the
spraying of areas in the county? Then
they would hear opinions voiced, and
_they would become aware of the opposition to this program.
No doubt they'll continue to take the
easy way out--"spray and away", unless the spontaneous public outcry becomes so obvious tothem that it cannot
be ignored.
Their choice againthis year has been
corridors of desolation rather than
And if it weren't because of a personal slow burn we suffer when we see
the spray burn along our roadways, it
would hardly seem worth the effort to
fight this mechanical monster.
Our scenic roads? Bah.
SIERRA BYWAYS “
OPERA OUTPOINTS GRIDDERS
ON COMPROMISE WEEKEND
IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE... Compromise is one
of the necessary ingredients of marriage, so before “we
two" took our seats in San Francisco's Opera House Saturday evening, “we two" took seats in Stanford Stadium. .
..From my standpoint, the evening proved more inter~esting than the afternoon (and I'm sure my wife agrees,
even if for different reasons)...The two “performances” had some similarities. Our seats on the 40yard-line, 23 rowsup, were more than matched by those
in Box O at the opera house. We missed the first touchdown (it happened so fast) while walking from the parking
lot to the stadium, We missed the first part of Act One
(which I had been told wasn't too interesting anyw ay)
when we appeared expecting the curtain to raise at 8:30
only to find it had risen at 8 p.m... There the similarities ended.
Leontyne Price isa far greater star than Stanford quarterback Dick Ragsdale, although I might find argument
here from Indian fans...And the spectacular Act Two
which paraded more than 300 performers across stage
featureda group that could have taken on both footba 11
teams and one of the rooting sections. Only the cute Indian and Spartan pom pom girls could hold their own by
comparison... Andinterestingly, the opera crowd was
far more enthusiastic, perhaps because the performers
were professional and didn't fumbléonce in the three and
one-half hours before the final curtain.
Certainly Aida must be ranked as a “must remember"
performance in my book of memories. Although Sandor
K onya (captain of the Egyptian guard), Regina Resnik
(daughter of the King of Egypt), Joshua Hecht (the King
of Egypt) and John Shaw (King of Ethiopia and Aida’s
father) all drew enthusiastic applause and bravos from
the various decks of the large opera house, I must confess that Leontyne Price as Aida was the single performer
whose singing made the opera enjoyable for me. True,
I enjoyed Shaw, too, but this columnist is not yet a
full-fledged opera fan---just a Leontyne Price fan at this
point.
Oh, yes, football---Stanford appears to have the makings of its best team in years, By the end of the season
the Indians should be able to hold their own on any field ...The Spartans of alma mater San Jose State? If they:
learntotackle, these Spartans could win their share during the year, too, And if the third-string “beef” in the
line gets some more good experience, the San Joseans
could become one ofthe toughest defensive clubs on the
coast by mid-season.

SHORT SHOTS... What's that? Hippocampelephantocamelos? A mythological monster? Actually, it’s a Mex~
ican Judas used there during Easter festivities, but several
are causing plenty of comment from visitors to O/W Stu-dioin Nevada City... Nevada City's planning commission doesn't really take a three month vacation-~-it just
doesn't schedule any meetings for the three summer
months, But it's always available for special call in the
event someone wants to seek a variance, file a subdivision map, petition for new zoning. Vacation? Heavens,
the state law under which city planning commissions are
organized doesn't permit that... Ted Sigourney, Nevada City fire captain, has worked for the city four years,
seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Says he doesn't
mind, there isn't anything to do on a day off. But the
Nevada City Council disagrees and has laid plans for a
Sigourney vacation, as Mayor Bob Carr says,” . . after
four years, I think we should throw your wish out the
window".
TREE TROUBLES?... Most tree failures in native trees
to this area come from over watering, so Farm Advisor
_ Bill Helphinstine points out. Oak trees are especially intolerant tochange in water "management", and most of
the native trees cannot survive when given too much surface moisture... One of the best ways to kill a native
tree is to plant water loving scrubs adjacent to the tree,
Helphinstine warns. He suggests leaving at least three
feet between the tree trunk and other plants... And
new home owners are warned against changing the ground
level around native trees,
CALIFORNIA
A NEW COMMISSION .
MAY STEM THE FLOOD
You might have read about a new state law that went
into effect last week raising the speed limit on certain
highways from 65 to 70 miles per hour. But it is likely
you did not read about another law that could be the
real sleeper of the 1963 legislative session, due to its
effect on the growth of every community in the state.
This new law creates a "Local Agency Formation Commission" in every county, and this commission will have
the power to approve, conditionally approve, or reject
all proposals for the creation of new incérporated cities
or special districts, and the annexation of territory to
existing cities or districts.
The commission will be composed of two county officials appointed by the board of supervisors, two city
officials selected by a committee of mayors, and a fifth
member to be chosen by the other four.
According tothe County Supervisor's Association, “the
intent of the new law is to provide for orderly growth and
development of California's urban areas," At the least,
the law will tend to discourage irresponsible procedures
which have been rife up to now.
For-example, before the passage of the new law, it
was no trick at all to create-a new city in California,
and new cities cropped up like mushrooms in certain parts
of the state, mainly the south, Often, the new cities received definite tax advantages--at the expense of the
