Wed., Sept.26,1973 The Nevada County Nugget 3
This week fifty years ago}
Highway contractors on the Truckee Summit Grade, a unit of
the Auburn-Verdi State Highway, were preparing -to discharge
what was believed to be the biggest blast ever attempted in
California Highway history. A train-car load of dynamite was to be
set off all at once to blow away the huge granite face opposite
Donner Peak and near the Summit Subway. No estimate of rock
tonnage involved could be made, but more than 50 tons of dynamite
was on hand. Residents for several miles around were removing
glass from their windows and some close to the blast area were
getting ready to leave temporarily until “the dust settles’’. A major
motion picture company and a newsreel production unit were on
the scene preparing to file the entire sequence of events for later
public viewing across the country.

A startling prediction was made by Lt. Col. Harry Graham of
the U. S. Army Air Services, who said, ‘‘Within five years it will be
commonplace to fly from New York to San Francisco in six hours.
Of course the machines will be flown at better than 30,000 feet
altitudes and will need to be heated electrically. Oxygen will also be
required because no one could live at that altitude without it’’.
