6 4 The Nevada County Nugget Wed., Sept. 26,1973 Educational achievement award Senior test dates listed Stephen Sargent, son of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Sargent, is a national merit scholarship semifinalist with a score putting him ‘in the 99th percentile. If Steve’s Scholastic Aptitude Test score, which he takes in October, is as good as his merit qualify test results, he will receive a merit scholarship. The Nevada Union High School senior has had all As through his high school years. A special scholarship meeting © for seniors and parents of ,; seniors will be held at 7:30 p.m. ; Oct. 2 in the high school library. Material about dates the Scholastic Aptitude Test and Achievement Tests will be given will be announced and material about scholarships will also be announced. NUHS students planning to attend college after graduating have five opportunities to take the American College Test during the school year. The first test will be given. Oct. 20 and registration must be completed by Oct. 1. Other test dates are Dec. 3, Feb. 23, April 27 and June 15. Registration blanks are available through Maxine Sleeper, counselor: in charge of : scholarships and testing. College Board Scholastic Aptitude and Achievement Test dates will be given throughout the school year with the first test to be given Oct. 13. Other dates for the SAT are Nov. 3, Dec. 1, Feb. 2, April 6 and June 22. The Achievement test, necessary for students planning to attend any campus of the University of Califrnia, will be given Dec. 1, Jan. 12 and May 4. Anyone applying for a scholarship must take either the Oct. 13 or Nov. 3 SAT test, no later tests will be accepted for scholarship reasons. Holloran, commander of the 9th SRW, during ceremonies held here recently. Sergeant Parker enrolled in his first college course at Yuba College in Mother Lode Dr. W. Turrentine Jackson, Professor of History at the University of California, Davis, and a world-renowned expert on the history of the American West and the California Gold Rush, will be the instructor for “The Mother Lode Country,” a UCD Extension. study tour. This course consists of a threeday bus trip through the California Mother Lode country along Highway 49 (the Mother Lode Highway), accompanied by historical lectures given by , Dr. Jackson. Dr. Jackson will discuss the influence of gold mining on Northern California cities and ' towns — the work, recreation, frustrations, and triumphs of individuals in the complex society of early-day mining camps. Those who have attended Dr. Jackson’s lectures rarely fail to note that they are crammed with interesting factual material, a great deal of which . is contained in interesting vignettes culled from the lives of real-life people. The bus leaves Davis at 8 a.m. Saturday, October 20 — the departure point is the MiniCenter, Hutchison Drive, on the UCD Campus. After picking up out-of-town participants at the ‘ Sacramento airport, the bus will ' travel to Placerville for a tour of the Bedford Mine, to Coloma and Auburn, where participants tour planned will spend’the first night. The following day (Sunday) will be
spent in and around Nevada City and Grass Valley. On the final day (Monday, a legal holiday), the bus heads for North San Juan and North Bloomfield, including a visit to Malakoff Diggins State Park. The trip includes visits to other historical and pioneer sites, aswell as lectures by local historians and a representative from the state highway department. The $90 fee includes bus fare, twin-bed room in Auburn and Nevada City, handouts, and two optional quarter units of Extension credit. Dr. Jackson, author of many articles and books on Western History, earned his doctorate at the University of Texas in 1940, and has been teaching at UCD since 1951. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in the 194990 academic year, a Rockefeller Foundation Huntington Library fellowship in 1953, and a grant from the American History Research Center and “the spring of 1969 and in March 1973, he received a bachelors degree in sociology/psychology from the Southern California based Chapman College. The New Orleans native has hopes of becoming an Air Force officer. He presently resides on base with his wife and three children. (USAF Photo) Five programs offered in Sierra forum series Patrons of Sierra College Forum Series presentations will note with interest that the College has scheduled five diverse and __ interesting programs for the Fall semester, 1973-74. A highlight of the series will be an appearance by Senator Daniel K. Inouye at Sierra on Friday, September 28, 1973 at 8:15 p.m. Senator Inouye, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, will share his insights about Watergate and related matters. “Hard Travelin’,” a multimedia group, follows on October 18. The production will feature the Wisconsin State Historical Society in* 1955-56. He also received the Social Science Research Council Award and a grant from the American Philosophical Society in 1956 for studies eoncerning British mining investments in the American West His studies brought him Guggenheim Fellowships in 1957-58 and 1965, the Humanities Institute Award in 1971-72, another Huntington Library Reséarch Fellowship in 1972. films, words and music of Woody Guthrie, an influential folk singer and composer of the depression era. On November 15, Russ Burgess, a psychic and skeptic at the same time, will astound his audience with amazing, informative and highly entertaining lecturedemonstrations on the power of Extra-Sensory Perception. Everyone should enjoy “A Night with Armour,” a program featuring one of America’s most distinguished and widely read writers of humor, Richard Armour. Armour’s presentation will take place on Thursday, December 13. Then on January 17, actors Gerald Hiken and Paul Richards bring “The New Theatre” to Sierra. “T. N.
