Rescue Squad Fund
Drive Is Under Way
The Nevada City Fire Department Rescue Squad is exhibiting
a scale model of the sailing vessel, Tam-O-Shanter, which formerly sailed out of San Francisco,
The model, made by Peter Owler, was completed in 1936
while he resided at Mountain View, and was donated to the Rescue
Squad for a fund drive, by his
son, Norman, The model is
valued at $1,000, 7
The fund drive, now underway
will end Nov, 11,

The vessel, the model and its
maker offer a romantic and intriguing background,
Owler was born in Scotland
and served 17 years in the Royal
Navy, entering the service at the
age of 14, While docked in San
Francisco, he jumped ship and
wnet to work for Robert Louis
Stevenson as skipper on the Tahiti and the Snark, He later. terminated his post with Stevenson
and was hired to manage the
Corenthian Yacht Club at Tiberon, Marin County,
Gollowing his tenure with the
Yacht Club he went to work as
a messenger for Wells Fargo
Express Company and within five
years was promoted to agent at
Mountain View, Calif., when the
company opened an office there
in 1906. He retired at the age
of 80 and died at the age of 89,
While with Wells Fargo he
worked on his hobby of build‘ing model ships, A total of 60
of his models have won prizes
in every event in which they
were entered, The latest prize
was the Sweepstakes prize won at
the 1949 California State Exposition, awarded to the City of
San Francisco,
A newspaper picture of ‘this
display may be seen at the Nevada City Fire Station. Some
of these models were used in
the filming of the picture '"Mutiny on theBounty,"
Said his son, None of these
ships that were made by my

Nevada City School
Teachers Get Raises
Mimimum starting salaries for teachers were raised from
$5,580 to $6,000, and classified employes of the Nevada City
School District will receive raises from $10 to $15 monthly,
a result of recommendations submitted to the Board of Trustees
by board member Carl Early, who had met earlier with a teachers’
committee,
The board, with four members present adopted the raises,
Mrs, Harriet Hume demurring
and voting nay, saying she felt
a beginning teacher should not
receive the same pay as a tea-_
cher who has been with the district one or two years,
However, only one teacher will
be affected by the raise to $6,00 minimum, according to W.
Edward Browning, superintendent, All the others, he said were
in a higher category,
Minimum salary before the increase was $5,580, and the top
of step five, with a degree plus
60 units was $8,712 and has been
raised to $9,000,
Mrs, Jean Haley, who said she
was spokesman for four teachers
with 75° or more utits, but not
a masters degree, spoke to the
‘board, She asked that the sixth
step, which now reads masters
degree only, be enlarged to include AB plus 75 units as well,
Browning suggested that the
teachers’ committee be asked to
recommend an equivalency category to go in step six,
The board voted to remove
$10,533, from undistributed reserves and apply it to the budged
category for salaries to offset
the cost of the salary increases,
Victor Huber presided at the
meeting with all members but
Jerry Christie present.
