“Immediate steps to salvage as much timber as possible in the Central Sierra
fire region are being taken
by the United States Forest °
Service,” . declared Charles
Connaughton, regional forester, in responsé to an inquiry from James Mussatti,
general manager of the
California State Chamber of
Commerce.
“Because the fires © are
still burning no firm estimate can. be made, of
course; but there is a possibility that some two to two
hundred and fifty million
board feet of timber, with
a stumpage salvage value
of around $3,000,000, can be
recovered from the approxi.mately °35,008 acres of government forest involved. A
similar amount may be recovered by the private
operators, whom we are encouraging to do the same,”
Connaughton said.
“In addition, the private
operators are being encourVOTE FOR

aged to follow their usual
practice of making adjustments in their cutting: of
green timber to compensate
for the burned quantity.
“While it is true that the
present ‘market for timber
is rather poor and we recog,
nize that will have an effect not only on the value
but on the rate at which
the timber can be cut and
marketed the salvage operations are important from a
number of aspects.
“One of them is sanitary,
So to speak,'in-that removal
of the damaged trees is
necessary to avoid their
becoming nests for the
breeding of insects. An insect epidemic is an everpresent danger following
forest . fires.
“This
speeded up cutting under
very difficult and unusual
circumstances. In fact, it is
a pretty dirty job. However,
such meastires prevent a
total loss in timber value.
“Of course timber values
are only one of the many
elements of loss in a catastrophy such as this. The impact on watershed values,
recreation resources, grazing for domestic stock and
wildlife and the _ scenic
beauty of the region is hard
to express in dollars but is
of tremendous importance
nonetheless.”

You'll find new models for ’61—longwheelbase 4-wheel drive units—and
thoughtful refinements throughout the
line. But the big news for '61 is naileddown proof (based on owner reports) that
Chevy’s torsion-spring design is the best
thing that’s happened to trucks in decades!
With Chevy’s independent front suspension and Sturdi-Bilt design, you cruise
over trails where other trucks creep. You
feel the difference in less wheel fight and
vibration. You can see why drivers are
happier, why loads are better protected
and why the truck itself will stand up
to thousands of miles of more work. That
goes for any size Chevy, too—pickups,
tilt cabs, tandems, all of them.
