House Tour
Draws Big
Crowd Here
By LuraArmold
Morethan 400 hundred people
were guided on a journey back
into Nevada City’s elegant past
Saturday when localresidents
and out of town visitors toured
some of the old and historic
homes filled with beautifully
mellowed antiques and knickknacks, :
The tour was sponsored by
the Nevada County Liberal Artsy
Commission to raise funds for the
purchase and restoration of the
old Nevada City Theatre. Five
homes and one business house
were included on the tour,
The Small-Anderson home at
533 Nevada Street is notable
for its beatiful antiques, many
of them being family herilooms
brought by the sisters when they
came toNevada City from
Virginia, One outstanding item
was a rosew Ood piano, beautifully inlaid and brass trimmed,
The piano, dated 1832, was
made by Dubois at Ethelard,
New York, and taken from an
old hen house on a plantation
near Farmville, Virginia, When:
found the case was in excellent
condition with the exception of
one roller and thick coat of
brown paint. Today it stands in
all its original beauty,

Theatre Flamenco Gives A Spotty
Community Concert Performance
By Don Hoagland
The Twin Cities Concert Association opened its new season in
Grass Valley Saturday night
rather weakly, but ended with a
strong Finish,
The fare for the evening was
a performance by Theatre Flamenco, which earlier releases had
assured everyone included authentic Spanish dancers and guitarists,
Perhapsthey were, but for the
first half of the program they
seemed as uncertain about Flamenco dancing as didthe audience,
Neither did much to help the
other,
The accoustics of the Grass
Valley Veterans Memorial Buil_
ding, asugual, were terrible
and the sound system which the
county recently rejuvinated, was
not used,
Into this‘atmosphere came atwo guitarists, who insisted on
sitting at the back of the stage
where they could barley be
heard, andan actor who recited
lines of Lorca poetry to the accompaniment of stomping heels,
He could not be heard at all,
But it was not all a loss, As
the evening went on both the
performers and the audience
gained strength and by the middle of the second half of the program the audience was roaring
its approval.
The first half of the program
closed with a number called
"Viva Nayarra" which included
the entire company, This was
colorful, humerous and well
done,
This came at a good time because it had been preceeded by
a piano solo by the accompan=
ists Henrietta Vinson, She played
a number which was unfamiliar
but which contained some lov(Cont, on Page 20)
