Dunbar . Sounding Board . . : we. Set In the office at Lake Wildwood a coupleof years ago the comment was made to me that the worst thing about Rough and Ready was its nomenclature, After some questioning I found they were referring to the signs of the various businesses in town, With all the money Boise Cascade spends on advertising its only natural they should be very conscious of signs, I always hated most of ours myself but I came home hoping to find some good in them, In most cases I had to admit the men in the office had been right, Since that time a couple of our businesses have put up some rather nice signs, The most striking one to date, is the new one for the Mexican Villa Cafe, Its simple and readable yet eyecatching and impressive which surely proves that the Solis family are clever as well as being good business people. The cafe is so far back from the road that its practically hidden from the view of thepasserby ashe comes along our curving highway until he has almost passed by. They put their sign on an old ore car right beside the road, With our area background this starts the ball rolling for the tourist, Then they used two beautiful old porch columns to hold the swinging sign at a proper viewing height, To top it all off the background is a fresh clean white with very neat bold red lettering, Yes; combined with the lovely rustic sign at the Wedding Chapel, the new rustic ones at the Country Store, the interesting ones at the Toll House, and Helenes gay ones, the town has a real good start on offsetting our neighbors criticism about ugly signs, It only takes one if its good! It looks like clutter might be the next problem. , * * Mrs, Bettie Decker is the new face at the Post Office and a very pretty one it is too, Mrs, Deckers regular job, in the fire season, is fire watch, She worked at the Banner Mtn, Tower for several years and at present is stationed at the tower between Colfax and Wiemar, She works in our PO on her days off, Before she came to our area she lived in Honolulu and worked at the P O there, Her son is in the Navy and is stationed in Hawaii at present, Bettie is replacing Mrs, Dora Grieme, No one can ever replace "Hettie'’ our Secession Day Dance Hall Queen, of course, but Mrs, Decker has taken over her job, Mrs, Grieme, whose husband has been ill for a long time, found there was just too many outside pressures, Mr, Grieme is in the Veterans Hospital at Martinez, Dora must take care of the ranch here at home and travel that long way back and forth, Besides she has a lively family of grandchildren nearby which do away with the possibility of any dull moments. Dora has been with our Post Office since I left there tho' I can't remember just when that was I know its been a long time, Another new thing at our Post Office these days is the possibility of Star Route deliveries on Rough and Ready Road, It seems there have been some requests for delivery there and you should see your Postmaster if you are interested, At present the. possible route only extends.as far out as the old Balch Road now named Pioneer Road but bearing a sign Deerlick Road, Deerlick Road is the first one on the left as you leave Rough and Ready Road on Pioneer Road, I think I know what I just wrote, Ask your Postmaster about deliveries, : F, SCHROEDER —"DefiniteHARLAND -KINDERMAN — ly yes!" "I think the Dodgers are gonna win," * * * * * * The Ladies of the Rough and Ready Grange had a workday last Tuesday for their Harvest Bazaar which is set for November 20, The Bazaar items shown at the regular meeting two weeks ago were really fabulous, There were more than the usual amount of everyday items but also shown were a dried apple doll, crocheted seed pearl necklaces, glass bead flowers, a garden hat, a patchwork quilt, childrens stuffed toy animals, and other things too numerous to mention, Seems Banner Grange is going to have their Bazaar on November 13 and they have even taken.on our last years Gypsy Tea Room idea so we will need these special things to tempt you purchasers out twice. Fair Booth Chairman Mrs, Eleanor Binder presented the Booth winnings and the Award Ribbon to
‘Womens Activities Chairman Mrs, Conne Baer, The group voted to send their usual donation to the Students Loan March which is a feature of the State Grange Annual Convention, The student co Loan Fund is a revolving loan to worthy College Students, It is repaid by the Graduate Students CHARLIE DANT — "For when they begin earning and has provided help for a great many young people throughout the State sure! of California, It is supported by local Granges but handled by the California State Grange, , * * * ccm ieee CINDY GILLIS —"I don't know COUNTY NUGGET and I don't really care," The current fad for crocheted seed pearl necklaces seems to bear out the old axiom that NEVADA ia "there is nothing new under the sun", Mrs, Hepsi Frank has one that is 100 years old, Hers is the old fashioned glass beads done in pink with an aqua stripe. It has been crocheted into a rope just as the seed pearls are today. It is beautiful! Hepsi says she wears it occasionally just to keep the luster in the crystal beads, : * * PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY BY NEVADA COUNTY PUBLISHING CO, * * * * 301 Broad Street : The Willis Ferrys have just returned from a visit in the Trinity Alps, They were guests of Nevada City, Ca. their daughter and son-in-law the Andy Muellers at Ruth Lake, Alice spent most of her time 95959 stream fishing and Willis caught up on some much needed rest, Perry is the overworked Real Estate Agent here in Rough and Ready, * * ey: Telephone 265-2471 * * ea, * ‘ Mrs, Helene Hurlbut has just returned from a very successful showing at the districts Annual Antique Show, It was held at Pioneer Village in Oroville, It was a three day show and attracted dealers from all over the state and even some from out of state, Helene packed items for’ several weeks before show time and went a day early to set up, It's a lot of work but very educational as well as profitable she says, She also showed at the Nevada County Show last May and she does the Marysville Show each year, ‘ * * Second class postage paid at Nevada City, California.
