All this is Nelson Eddy, handsome
American baritone, whose concert
February 10 will be his first in five
years in Sacramento,
Star of concert. oratorio, festival,
opera, radio and cinema, he has
triumphed in every musical field. In
radio he has been the attraction of
such major hours on the air as General Motors, Ford, Firestone, Vick
and Squibb, and for three seasons
has been starring on the Chase and
Sanborn program along with Charlie
McCarthy.
His first important motion picture,
Naughty Marietta, in which he-costarred with Jeanette MacDonald.
was released in the spring of 1935
and made him world famous overnight. His second, Rose Marie, was
equally spectacular. A nation of film
fans awaited his next vehices, Maytime, Rosalie, Girl of the Golden
West, Sweethearts and Balalaika.
For years he was the idol of opera
in Philadelphia, first with the Philadelphia Civic Opera under Alexander Smaliens, then with the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company under
such conductors as Leopold Stowokwki, Fritz Reiner. Later he sang with
the Los Angeles and San Francisco
Opera companies, featured in such
contrasting works a8 Tannhauser
and Aida. .
Eddy likes all three of his careers
—concert, picture and radio, but
‘when doing one, he says, he tries to
forget the others.
“But every year,” he continues,
“! look forward with the greatest
anticipation’ to my concert tour. I
like to travel. I like to meet the publie-face to face, and I like to sing to
a real audience. I come back refreshed for my work in the pictures.
