\ i ' bitin ace he ee eee 3 The Nevada County figat SEPT. 29, 1971 Bud Hoskinson — a man with an exciting past By P, L, SMITH _ In 1931, Japan seized Manchuria and = made: it a puppet state, . . .in a saguinary conflict which forever changed the face of China; and which, in the eyes of many experts, led toa series of evenst spurring the militarists of Japan on to that "Day of Infamy," December 7, 1941, * k * A man with an exciting past is a frequent visitor to Nevada City and vicinity. Heowns aparcel of land near Lake Vera, and currently resides in Benecia, Ellsworth L, "Bud" Hoskinson (Maj. USA Ret, 1960) now wears the bars of a Lieutenant in the American Patrol Service in Benecia, working at the big Humble Oil Refiner in a "security officer" capacity. we Almost 40 years ago Hoskinson served as a private in the U. S. Marine Corps. during the Sino-Japanese outbreak over Manchuria, He was in the thick of it in 1932-34, His later service with the U. S. Army in the European Theatre of Operations and in the Korean conflict some years later, would certainly provide ‘much story material, . . .but hismemories of his "old China hand" days are still vivid and interesting. Like most veterans of overseas service with the U. S, Armed Froces, Bud is a modest man, It was not without persuasion that this writer obtained his permission to read and make use of his scrapbooks covering that era, Some of this well preserved material may awaken latent memories in some of our readers, * * * Name: Pvt, E. L. Hoskinson Assigned to: Company B (26th) Keep this slip and wait until called by your Sergeant. That's the way the mimeo-, Br aphed slip, measuring 2-3/4" *x 4" reads, And, . .that's where youstarted to "hurry up and wait," Private Hoskinson! Another piece of paper, slightly larger, bears the heading: "I hereby acknowledge receipt of the below specified articles of Government Property: 1 Helmet, steel; 1 Cot, canvas; — Gene Will abies Wheels $9.95 Rotate & Balance All Four Tires $4. 00 Additional RECAPPING SERVICE PLAZA TIRE CO., INC. Eoskinson had to-sign his life away." Bud returned from that tour with a mass of material, much of it in pictures graphically por' traying the devastation of much of China — with accompanying stories of the toll of pemaniy en masse, Thru the hundreds of pages;now grown brittle with age, are pictures -of contrasting situations during the warfare.. . such as scenes of many ceremonies — particularly of the French celebrating BastilleDay, with parages in downtown Shanghai and other large cities; views of Jehol — "Magic City Of The Wilderness Of Mongolia" — where the Emperor's famous Summer Palace was situated; shots of coolies toiling to pull (by long ropes) cargo-laden junks thru Szechwan Province via the Yangtse River; and pictures of young and old haunting improvised rice kitchens in search of a bit of food; scores of pictures of various Marine: units engaged in combat, legation and consulate guard duties, on parade, or enjoying recreational facilities provided by the Government or civilian groups. As Bud re-lives those years in china, he finds some happy memories in the recol. lection of his activities as a _Pugby player, and as a boxer of considerable standing among his contemporaries. He was really a "fighting Marine" on both battle and "sports" fronts in those days! ; His scrapbooks also indicate ‘that there was a lively social life for Marines with liberty to indulge in‘ things on the lighter side, Bud has collected many engraved invitations to supper dances; advertisements of night club events; ticket stubs for theatrical performances and other forms of entertainment dear to the hearts of all servicemen, everywhere, It cost 40¢ a dance, or three for $1, at the Ritz Cafe; he also saved bar chits, tailor's bills and one particularly interesting bootmakers bill dated 5/13/32, e « » addressed to him from Lee Foo Mow, No, 57 Hart Road, corner of Bubbling Well Road in Shanghai. There he had purchased a pair of riding boots Get Started Early ‘WITH THAT PAINTING YUBA RIVER LUMBER CO. Commander-in-Chief of the China Station, Snakes were served at the banquet, and apof black parently Mr. Chu's death was due to snake poison eaten’with the food." Shades of the Borgias!
The smile of a victor is seen on Jack Sharkey's face in a picture accompanying the account of his defeat of. Max Schmeling. . . .making Jack the new heavyweight champion of the world, This was an event of great interest to our aspiring boxer, On the same page is a picture of Jack Dempsey enjoying the company of several the-. atrical and social lovlies at the grand opening of swanky Club E1 Patio. Also included in the memorabilia are cartoons — some hilariously funny "in" jokes obviously; pen and pencil sketches; theatrical cheesecake; andnumerous bits of creative writing by and about the gung ho Marines, One bit of poetic prose pretty much sums up the philosophy of Hoskinson and his buddies in the Corps, . . ."Too tired to work, too tired to play, tootired to go, too tired to stay; too tired to write, too tired to talk, too tired to ride, too tired to walk; too. tired to warm, too tired to freeze, too tired to cough, too tired to sneeze; too tired to laugh, too’tired to sigh, too tired to live, too tired to die; too tired to kiss, too tired to greet, too tired to starve, too tired to eat; too tired to wish, too tired to think, . .but” NEVER too tired to drink!" * * & Ex-Marine Hoskinson comes to Nevada City as often as his duties in Benecia permit, He _has plans for that piece of propSie erty at Lake Vera, . . .later on, In the meantime he devotes much of his leisure to fishing, boxing and following his favorite football teams in victory and defeat, He is a smiling, friendly chap . who relishes good company and good conversatio™. . .but who minimizes his part in affairs past and present, Welcome to Nevada County, Bud, Funds distributed to county by controller ‘The office of State Controller Houston I, Flournoy has just released the distribution of funds collected from the ciga-rette, Highway Carriers’ Uniform Business License and the highway users taxes, Nevada° county — received $2,513.41 from the cigarette tax with $2,225.55 being distributed to Grass Valley.
