Narrow Gauge Book To Be Published In 1965
Author Will Visit Nevada City
. [had to absent myself for a couple of weeks from writing this
column so I could pursue a labor of love contributing in a small
way in assisting in the publishing of a picture history of The Nevada
County Narrow Gauge Railroad, the world's most glamorous short
line railroad, thatservedNevada City and Grass Valley in the grand
mariner for over 66 years.
For over a decade it was my privilege and my pleasure (at times
fraught with terror) to be on the payroll and to be associated in almost every phase of its operation on the wonderful NCNG THE
NEVER COME NEVER GO Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad,
My good friend, Gerald M. Best of 511 North Sierra Drive,
Beverly Hills, California is the author, and his effort will climax
years of research and picture gathering. The book, that is expected
tobe published in January 1965 will also include the picture history
of The Nevada County Traction Co the electric trolley that served
both Mill Street in Grass Valley and Broad Street in Nevada City
and all the waystations in between and the picture story of at least
two historic mines the Empire and the Idaho Maryland Mines.
This collector's item book for those that ever worked in the gold
mines, rode the electric trolley or went to a Sunday School picnic
on the Narrow Gauge will find an enthusiastic audience in the entire world of railroad buffs and particularly to the history lovers of
Nevada County. It will be published by Howell-North Books of 1050
Parker Street, Berkeley, 10, California. Mr. Morgan North, of this
publishing firm worked in the deep gold mines in Grass Valley as a
youth, Gerald Best has just recently received exciting co-operation
‘from those that knew the railroad: Miss Bernice Glasson, whose
father John Glasson controlled 20% per cent of the outstanding shares
at each meeting, Johnny Nolan, whose mother Margaret made the
first ride in 1876 and the last ride on the famous shortline in 1942, , ,
Fred Hawke, with great knowledge of the trestles, Rose Geronimi,
and many others, Mr, Best will be at the National Hotel Sept.
16-19 and will continue his interviews with Tom Moyle, Carl
Trevethick, James Henwood and other members of the last man:
club.
If YOU have a good anecdote, a picture of a political or picnic
excursion write me or Mr. Best. You should be able to contribute,
Del Eddy of Hanford. So as to say Thank You, Gerald Best, for
bringing to a reality this long neglected history -in-picture -storyform of Nevada County in its golden years, we today publish these
rare never before pictures from my privare collection:
