Tuesday morning when this truck driven by Carl W, Smith, 22, of
Lompoc, jack-knifed on the Coyote Street hill spilling logs across
the road and into two front yards, Smith, whose brakes overheated,
was cited for failure to keep his vehicle under control on a moun~
tain road,

Society Is Formed
A society for prevention of
cruelty to animals, the Nevada
County Humane Society, is being
formed according to Mrs. Parks
Hartley, executive secretary of
the new organization.

Club Is Organized
The newly formed Nevada
County Young Democrats elected
temporary officers and continued
organization planning at a meet~
ing August 25 in the Ed Nygard
home on Ridge Road.
Rus Porter and Theodora Simpson of Grass Valley were named
co-chairmen of the group and
Kathy Avery of Rough and Ready
was named secretary -treasurer.
State Senator Paul J. Lunardi,
(D) Seventh District, spoke to the
group of 25 present and aided
them inthe organizational plans.
The club hopes to attract more
young married members to the
organization, .The age limits for
membership are from 16 to 35.
Thenext meeting will be held
at 8 p.m. Monday in the Nygard
home. At that time members of
the new Roseville Club will be
present to discuss mutual. problems and projects.

Begins Swing Through
6th Assembly District
Howard R. Smith, Democratic
candidate for Assembly, today
announced his first official campaign swing through the southern
part of the 6th Assembly District.
He will begin today in Mono
County where Mrs. Marilyn Hayden, County Chairman, has
scheduled a luncheon in his honor
among other functions.

Two ps. sre were recently donated to the Nevada City museum
by Captain Lewis Hage retired, of
the San FranciscoFire Museum and
the Society of California Pioneers. ALE
The oldest photo was taken in
front of the New York Hotel sometime before 1863, since it shows
what was the second building of
the Nevada City Methodist Church
which was destroyed by the great
fire that leveled most of the tow
that year.
The second photo shows the pres~
ent building with its steeple as it
appeared a short time after it was
* built perhaps 1870, before the
flow of gold was shut off from the
hydraulic mining. It was after two
fires had inflicted heavy damage

The goal of complete restoration, preservation and renewal of this historic church building has moved forward in large steps in recent years. In 1959 the sanctuary's interior
S\ was redecoratedandthe stain glass windows installed. This year the building's exterS))
ior was restored and preserved at a cost of nearly $10,000.00. If all the remainder of
©the indebtedness incurred in completing this part of the project can be retired by Sept.
6, Bishop Tippett will rededicate our church's sanctuary to its second century of service asa house of worship in this historic community. Reservations for the dinner and
