es 2a . Heady Meu = By Fay M. Dunbar Those “dear old Golden Rule days" are here again, The boys: all have.their new jeans and the young ladies have their new wardrobe. Mother is exhausted and the family pocketbook is in bie co too. th the big yelses are ro! again and Mother can relax. . Wouldn't it be nice to go back to the Golden Rule days again and I don't mean be young again. If our laws keep getting more encumbered with whereases and such, which seem to make them easier to break, we may have to return to the Golden Rule again to avoid becoming anation governed by lust and greed. But for now its the "School Days" of the old song we are primarily concerned with the pressing problems of the very young. ‘ I wish I could believe in the generation gap everyone talks about. It makes a marvelous excuse for just about every shortcoming large or small. But you know I think our youngsters are very much the same as young . people ‘always were. Their material advantages and temptatioris make help over the rough spots and wise guidance around the pitfalls a must. But this has been a "must", for the learning ages, since the time of Socrates the great teacher, about 470 BC. Socrates favorite expression was "Kaw thyself." His most famous pupil, Plato, ence said "Until philosophers are kings — cities will never cease from ill, nor the human race," Provided with a good set of values, like the: ones Socrates gave to Plato that "the good and the intelligent are identical concepts," our youngsters will move _ their mountains just as every generation has since Socrates time. However this good set of.values is going to have to be learned at, or even occasionally over, the family knee. The little space age school house these days only seems: to be interested in developing SUPER people with @ BIG flair not THINKING peox ple who want to build a BETTER world. This has happened many times since Socrates time and will unfortunately probably happen many more. Anyway the big yellow buses are rolling again. But Mother please don't relax too much, * * * Forgive the foregoing diatribe. I knew I had been feeling dreadful and besides the beginning of school always makes me think too much. Maybe it's because I studied to be a teacher and maybe it’s just the questions in those eager young faces, I see by the dictionary diatribe means "a bitter and violent denunciation." I only meant to be thinking on paper. I guess my mind needs he rg fresh air. The beginning of school, always ends. a round of family type vacationing. One of my young nieces from down San Diego way and her family visited us. My two grandnieces ages seven years and nearly five years spent most of their time collecting rocks, Mother helps with the cementing and they make all kinds of familiar animals — dogs, fishes, turtles and rabbits to name a few. Each rock was carefully selected, washed and packed in a box, 273-2934 Another of my grandnieces, who lives in Hawaii, sends them coral and shells which they use in making Sea Dioramas. Their interest has lasted over a year now, so according tothe thinking of the little space age school house, they. must be jearning many things. At least they were tek Mr. and Mrs. Ted Olson who have been visiting Mrs. Olson's parents, the Ken Beaties, for 2 couple of weeks returned home to Palos Verdes last Monday. The Olson's children are a bit too young for school. Christine is only three yéars and Kenneth just seven months, but father attorney Ted Olson had to get back on the job. The Olsons plan to return for a family reunion at Christmas time, ‘ * * * The Don Litchfields are home from visiting relatives and friends in Southern California. Their trip included a-visit with friends at Auberry in the mountain and lake area near Fresno, . a visit to their old home and . friends in Pomona, to friends at Alta Loma, and to Mrs, Litch— field's sister in Palmdale, Mrs. Litchfield's mother, Mrs. Lillian Hammer of Hesperia, has returned home. She spent several weeks here this summer visiting with Pat and her family. Miss Linda Litchfield spent most of her summer in Southern California visiting her dearest girlfriend: Shirley accompanied Linda home for a short visit before the girls had to get back to their school work, * * * The. Eugene Walter family spent an extra long Labor Day weekend with Mrs. Walters parents, the Richard Lawsons, of Upland California. They came home in‘time to get young daughters Anna Marie and Barbara off to school. ; * * * Rough and Ready's day at the county chamber .of commerce booth at the district fair was Saturday the 23rd. I'm sure. a more hilarious day was never before experienced by the'staid old commercial building. The Mmes, Helen Avery, Maciel Filer, Joan Mader, Barbara Sailor and Helen Steele manned the booth. for the Rough and Ready Chamber, flew the Secession Flag, and did a real fun job for the community, The Fire Dept. Auxiliary willhold their regular September meeting Monday Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. at the Grange Hall, * * * The Grange rummage sale wilL. be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4and Friday, Sept. 5 at the Grange Hall. The ladies always have some interesting items. Mrs. Esther Bixler and Mrs. Myrtle Hester are chairmen of the semi-annual event. xk * Mrs, Irene Lanzendorfer and her family are here from the bay area visiting her parents, the Fred McCumbers, There was more than visiting accomplished on this. vist. The Lanzendorfers have started workon their new home here. They are building on thé hill above the McCumbers home, fr he le AD . OS mae
