What is so rare as a day in June?" Well a day in September can be perfect too as last Sunday proved. It wasa little warm on the Blacksmith Shop roof where the volunteer well wishers of our community did their stint that morning putting on shakes. For those of us-on the ground and mostly in the shade it was lovely. The shakes are on almost half way up the roof now on both sides. The crew that worked last Sunday Allan Brown, Don Long, Allan McCrea, John Schuster, and Percy Weeks all left their own winterizing jobs at home to do their bit for the old shop. Just a few more weeks and she will be protected from the winter blasts that have done their best to destroy her for so many winters past. I'm not sure if you call a blacksmith shop she or not, Maybe that applies to just ships. It sounds all right, so I guess you will know what I mean. Mrs. Helene Hurlbut of Helen's Antiques has just returned from four very interesting days at the Butte County Antique Show. The show was held at Prospector Village in Oroville. Items of value from all over California and some from other parts of the United States were shows. Lucille McCrea. and Grace Jansen attended the paint-in at the Bridgeport Bridge last week. Lucille took some of her lithographs of Rough and Ready and finished an oil she was doing of the bridge for the auction. Mrs. Jansen took two previously finished paintings to donate for the Restoration Fund. Mrs, Jansen is a painter of some note from the bay area. John and Grace Jansen are newcomers to our community. Mr. Jansen is a retired contractor. They are now living on Prospector Way on the old Bursill Ranch. R&R Willard Schoellerman of Boise Cascade Company was guest speaker at the Rough and Ready © Chamber meeting last Thursday evening. He explained the Lake Wildwood development and spoke of Boise Cascade's desire to fit into our Nevada county community. It was a most interesting and informative evening for those attending. Loraine Long served coffee and cookies,The Don. Longs are getting in their last outings before the rains come. Last Sunday they/ visited our neighboring town of Wahington and enjoyed some time on the river there. The Sunday before they visited-Don's mother, Mrs. Zella Long at Soquel, Calif. bal * * R&R =A ae * -The Ronald La Valles and son Skip spent the weekend visiting an aunt and grandfather in southern Oregon. Skip's ‘two sisters Karen and Patricia Ann kept the home fires burning. R&R . cs The Fire Dept. Auxiliary meeting scheduled for Monday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. will be held at the home of Pat Litchfield. It seems impossible, with the warm days we're having now, but that fire house where they had planned on holding future meetings can get awfully cold in the evenings. Principal order of business will be plans for the Christmas Bazaar. The ladies need money to make the fire house a little more liveable. ~ ok * * R&R ag ¥ Airman First Class Terrence Harwood is home on leave before his new assignment to Thailand begins. Terry had his training at the Special Weapons School in Denver and at Nellis Air Base near Las Vegas. His tour of duty is over next April and it was beginning to look as if he was not going to get the chance to.use any of it. This is a nice time of year for him to be home. The Harwoods are harvesting some of their very new orchard. My gift was the most beautiful big, juicy, Delicious Apple you ever saw, And not a worm! * * . R&R * of David Siegfried, Petty Officer Third Class is on the USS Virgo somewhere in the South Pacific, At home David and Terry are also next door neighbors. — * * R&R * * Sadie Ryan of Oakland contacted her school days friend, Martina Paull again last week. Sadie is here on another visit to her neice, Dorothy Niesen. Sadie was born on the old Ennor Ranch at the foot of the Rough and Ready grade, way back in 1883, She has not been too well the last couple of trips here and soesn't do much visiting, but Martina looks forward to her calls and always lets nie know. Couldn't Shese two tell some fabulous tales of the eld days. R&R * Helen Beatie director of the Newcomers' Lyric Ensemble of Nevada County has arranged a program for the group for October 13, They will sing for the daughters of the Nile when that organization has their area meeting here. We are working on some beautiful music. I love vacations and mine is scheduled~for the 8th but I'm sure going to miss this program. Last June when our group sang for the general hospital we had to work without a piano. Since our music is not arranged for acapella singing it was not our best effort. Meda Snow, accompanist for the group made a plea, at the Newcomers' July luncheon meeting here in Rough and Ready, _that something be done about this situation. Now there are not just one but three pianos at the General Hospital. They have arranged one for the ladies ward, one for the men's ward, and one is in the dining room. Music even just new faces seems to help some of these patients over trying times. Rough and Ready has six voices inthe ensemble. They are Helen Beatie, Barbara Miller, Beulah Shearer, Olyve Simmons, Elaine Vogt and myself. If you sing Soprano, second soprano, or alto we surely need you and it's lots of fun and hard work. ; * * R&R 5 * My thought for the week, Isn't itamazinghow many excuses, rationales, and so forth we can find for not.doing something we didn't want to do in the first place.
