Dunbar 273-2934" David Siegfried, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Siegfried of Hilaire Acres Road, left Aug. 19 for the San Diego Naval Training Base. Dave had to undergo extensive examinations before he was accepted into his chosen program of advanced His freshman enrollment papers for the _ fall semester at Sierra College eame just after he left for training. Dave took lots of math at NUHS and hopes to be able to advance to one of the eight electronics training schools about the United States. He recently studied Morse code and obtained an amatuer "Ham" license. He was to telephone his patents on his arrival in San Diego but instead they first received word by radiogram from a friendly "Ham" operator in Palo Alto. FHT Terry Harwood, who was in training in the Air Force special weapons school in Colorado until last April is doing extended work with a new squadron at Las Vegas Air Base. He is enjoying the many parks and recreational facilities around Lake Mead. His family is looking forward to a visit home about Sept. 16. HEHE Miss: Karen*Michete’McCreéa,.~ daughter of the Allen McCreas, will become the bride of James Lester Cannon on Sept. 7. Karen grew up in Rough and Ready. JHBHHABHHH Daniel Beatie is home from the hospital. Daniel suffered a broken knee cap in a syimming accident while visiting in Peoria, Illinois. His return home, by plane with his leg propped up on the seat opposite, was less than pleasant. His stay in the hospital was brief but a leg cast will keep him from his usual activities for a while, The problem of classes, starting Tuesday at N.U.HLS. is going to take some solving. dHHHHHHHEE Sid Fippin is due for a check up and treatment at the veterans Hospital in Martinez next week. His duties, as flag raiser for our community, will be undertaken by Jay Cullum, Manager of the nearby service station, dHHHHAHHHE Rough and Ready Grange will hold a public party at the Grange Hall on Sunday Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. The ladies of the Grange will conduct their annual rummage sale on Sept. 4 and 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. HHH Mrs. Donna Staidle, who has been so active in the Rough and Ready Fire Dept. Aux. has moved to a new home on Lazy Valley Road. Some of the ladies of the auxililiary held ahouse warming for her last Friday. They remembered the new home with a ‘beautiful picture and some glassware, THEE Mrs. Dorothy Hicks of Harmony Acres and I spent last Saturday at the Nevada County booth at the California State Fair answering questions and handing out literature about Nevada County. I’m sure we gave our best answers where it concerned Rough and Ready. THEE Rough and Ready really supports the district fair. Rough and Ready Grange took a 3rd place with their feature booth which portrayed Nevada County water resources and a 5th with their garden display booth aptly named "Lover's Retreat." The Fire Dept. quenched the nonalcoholic thirsts and served quantities of homemade pies and cakes. The Chamber of Commerce staffed the County Chamber booth on Sunday and sold Rough and Ready mementos and "Made in Rough and Ready" items including about 5,000 rosettes in their country store. Mrs. Elaine Vogt again won the bake goods sweefstakes. The 4-Hers did» well, too. Bruce Harwood brought home the only trophy. It was for woodworking. Lily Gates placed 2nd in the clothing sweepstakes. In food preservation Debby Nyce , tied with Delores Farley of anothér club for the sweepstakes. .The electrical group, Don Burkhard, Bruce Harwood, Jon Pharis and Ron Small, all won blues and Ron, who won two blues was a close runnerup for the electrical trophy. In photography which had no 4-H Division Ron Small won a lst, 2nd, and 3rd place in open competition. ; In the goat ‘division, which also had no 4-H competition, Linda Burkhard won a junior championship and a Ist and 2nd
place on oneentry and a 2nd place onher other entry. She also won a 2nd in showmanship in open competition. Meg Sailor had grand champion lamb and ewe. Linda Prochaska got the blue and John Prochaska took 2nd place in the home furnishings project; Last but not least Don Burkhard, Dede and Donny Moore, John Prochaska; Steeve Steel,.and Mike. Stewart were all eligible for the livestock Auction with their animal projects. Appreciation social for PV firemen Appreciation night for firemen of the Penn Valley Volunteer Fire Dept. will be Friday evening in the fire house. President Jeanette Baloun invites all firemen and their wives, all auxiliary members and their husbands to attend the ice cream social at 7:30 p.m. Sally Yost is chairman for the event and asks all attending to bring their own table service. The 39-day split season continues through Monday, September 30, then reopens November 30 through December 8, The daily bag limit is 10 birds, with 20. allowed in possession after opening day. The DFG reports census data indicates better. than average breeding populations inthe Great Basin, Sacramento Valley, and Imperial Valley-Colorado River areas with normal or slightly below normal in the remainder of the state. Production has been good to excellent in all areas, Recent rain in Northern California has caused a grouping of birds in some areas, and a southward movement has been noted, The archery hunting season for Sierra and ruffed grouse opened Saturday. : The two-week season continues through Sunday, September 15 with a limit of two Sierra or ruffed grouse in the aggregate per season, two in possession, : Grouse may bé hiunted in the counties of Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Humboldt, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Mendocino, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, and Yuba. Alleghany man finishes class FT, EUSTIS, Va. (AHTNC) = Private First Class Steven J. Peterson, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin J. Peterson, Alleghany, Calif., has completed aircraft electrician course at the Army Transportation School, Ft. Eustis, Va. During the 13-week course, he was trained to maintain, test and repair aircraft electrical components and systems. He also received instruction in the proper use and maintenance of shop test equipment. Peterson entered the Army in February of this year and completed basic training at Ft. Lewis, Wash. A 1966 graduate of Alleghany High School, he was employed by the U. S. Forest Service, Camptonville, Calif., before entering the Army.
