GRASS VALLEY -----Walter
Alpers, custodian at the Nev=
ada Union High School, was
feted at a surprise party by
his fellow workers and the
administrators at the school
Wednesday in honor of his
retirement after 38 years of
‘service to the. district.
“Wally” asheis affection=ately known to hundreds of
students, past and present,
and teachers was taken com=
pletely by surprise as fellow
custodians, bus drivers,
members of the office staff
of the school, Superintendent Gerald Gellat and Principal William George welcomedhimtocake, and
coffee in the afternoon.
He was presented with a
fishing rod and handy case by
the group.
Superintendent Gallet expressed appreciation on behalf of the Board for Alpers
long service to the district,
while Principal George spoke
feelingly of his own association with him over the
years,
Alpers became an employe
of the district with the opening of the then new building
at Grass Valley High School
in 1924, he with the late O,
H, Fuller being the first custodians forthe district, In
more recent years, as responsibilities grew, he was
named chief custodian.
He and his wife Edna wilt
remain in Grass Valley in
their home on Main street

of beauty regardless.
This is a very large genus, consisting
of more than 125 species, 12 of them
growing on the West Coast, many of them
blooming here now. The blooming period is
from August through September.
The rod-like form of some of the species
was. considered by the Druids to indicate
their use as divining rods for locating
springs of fresh water or hidden treasures
of goldand silver, accordingtomythology.

Public Campground, a popular and heavily used area
on Highway 40 for the last
. 30 years, isnow permanently
closed, according to Tahoe
National Forest district ranger, Pete Wyckoff.
This closing is occasioned
by the relocation of Highway
. . 40, which will traverse the
campground area.
The Big Bend Campground
willbe replaced by Califorered by the Yuba River as was
the old one.
It will contain the same
nia as a part of the forest
service's requirements for
granting of the easement
over the existing facility.

be at Indian Springs about
three miles west of Cisco
Grove. It will also be bordnumber of family units, 29,
