‘inawewrrtsne BY DEAN THOMPSON JUST FAIR...Perhaps a person should visit no more than two fairs in any single year, but the California State Fair this year impressed us with its mediocrity...Admittedly it was a hot day and a hurried schedule, but there were onlya scattered few pleasant moments in this year's visit...Ourchoice forthe top two county booths included theSan Francisco Chinatown scene, and the simple but forceful San Diego citrus exhibit. ..Rumors have itthat Nevada County's booth this year might have gathered in a higher aw ard than the third place it won had the booth been complete when the judges toured the building. .. Most enjoyable entertainment on the quick trip was the Mexican group with their songs and dances, -»+.-The annual press awards dinner, a disappointment because the awards were given without explanation as to the stories that won the prizes for the various media... One bright spot, the crowning of Carla Bulkley, Orange County entry, as Maid of California, Miss Bulkley was one of three that seemed to stand out among the eleven finalists, although the whole group was exceptionally closely matched,.,. Hail, the Maid of California, and perhaps we'll enjoy the 1963 fair a little more.
