JUST FAIR...Perhaps a person should visit no more
than two fairs in any single year, but the California State
Fair this year impressed us with its mediocrity...Admittedly it was a hot day and a hurried schedule, but
there were onlya scattered few pleasant moments in this
year's visit...Ourchoice forthe top two county booths
included theSan Francisco Chinatown scene, and the
simple but forceful San Diego citrus exhibit. ..Rumors
have itthat Nevada County's booth this year might have
gathered in a higher aw ard than the third place it won
had the booth been complete when the judges toured the
building. .. Most enjoyable entertainment on the quick
trip was the Mexican group with their songs and dances,
-»+.-The annual press awards dinner, a disappointment
because the awards were given without explanation as to
the stories that won the prizes for the various media...
One bright spot, the crowning of Carla Bulkley, Orange
County entry, as Maid of California, Miss Bulkley was
one of three that seemed to stand out among the eleven
finalists, although the whole group was exceptionally
closely matched,.,. Hail, the Maid of California, and
perhaps we'll enjoy the 1963 fair a little more.
