a SMALL EDITORIAL PROGRAM FOR CHAMBER NECESSARY TO BEGIN AGAIN Directors of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce are getting a reaction to the action they took in closing the organization's office. In general, the directors are being told that the city needs a chamber of commerce, and t hat the organization should be reactivated as soon as possible. oe Most of the group's directors hoped that this would be the reaction to their steps which could have led to the permanent death of the chamber. Many of these directors are not yet satisfied that the reaction has been strong enough to indicate that there is enough interest to make the chamber successful again. i Three needs are basic to the hopes for reinstatement of the chamber as an active city force. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce’ needs a program. The Fourth of July, the bicycle race, the Christmas promotion---these are all events. They are events that the chamber has sponsored, but they could be sponsored by any of a dozen Nevada City organizations. But there is no organization in Nevada City exclusively dedicated to promoting the city and the nearby area. The chamber, itself, has been lax in this effort. It is-time to develop a good promotional program. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce coulddo the job, if it desired. TOWN : S 1 @ be ALL OPPOSED TO “PANCAKES? 's : WITHOUT SAUSAGES WILL MEET AT BLATHER HALL, The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce needs a budget. Its current inactivity is the result of months--~yes, years---of existence ona month to month basis with only the hope that the next money-raising event, the next group of new members, would put the chamber ina more sound financ ial position. If NevadaCity is worth promoting tothe outside world, and we know that it is, then the job is worthy of more than handto mouth fiscal management. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce needs members. Merchants ? Yes, because the chamber most logically aids them by promoting the city. MALL WORLD But more, residents of the. community and the area have a stake in the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce. So the chamber needs active members who will go out and get other active members, and all of whom. will join in the work necessary to make a success of chamber functions for the community. The chamber needs a promotional program. It needs a budget to show how the program can be financed. It needs the members to put the budgeted program into operation. Reactivate the chamber? Sure, but let's do it right this time. SIERRA BYWAYS AN INVITATION ACCEPTED SHADES OF CLEOPATRA. ....Not to be outdone by fellow -columnist Bob Paine, I've accepted an invitation to attend the first production of the S.F, opera season, IGE ss It would be more accurate to say that I have been talked into seeing this production, for opera and I have never really been on speaking terms. Be that as it may, on Sept. 21, you will be in the S.F, Opera House with me, and it may be the last opera we share. You may have to go alone next time..... I should also point out that while Paine's trip down the Nile with Cleo was subsidized by the Nugget, yours truly will be on his own. My boss feels that I'll get plenty of culture when UC Davis brings its productions to Nevada City. He may be right. .... Before the 21st I promise to do a little research on this “aiada”. I've been told there is much ado about a death scene, and that the second act is by far the most interesting. This latter bit of information killed my plans to leave after the first act if it was too boring. Now I'mstuck through the second act, and, who knows, that may be most of the evening..... We shall see. SHIP AHOY..... NU teacher George Ellsworth, on a year's leave of absence, will be off for the Bay Area where Ellsworth plans to become a student himself this year. He and Mrs. Ellsworth will live aboard their new

Had fog all the way to Eureka, navigating by radar6 But no complications to mar the ik. ss The Ellsworths spent five weeks in and out of Canadian waters before bringing the vessel to its new home from Seattle. FALL COLORS..... Ifthe last few days of warm weather are an indication that we are in for an Indian Summer, itwon't make this writer angry at all..... Just after announcing that the Nugget was going to sponsor the annual Fall Color Spectacular, I began to note a fallish tinge beginning to appear on some of our nearby trees. With the Spectacular scheduled for Oct. 17 through mid-November, it began to look as though our timing was off. SHORT SHOTS....:; Bev Hackett, wife of artist Dick Hackett, was pleasantly surprised this weekend to find one of her artistic masterpieces (on exhibit at the State Fair) pictured in the country living section of the Bee.. _.FFA award winner at the State Fair for his champion and also for his grand champion Brown Swill female was Harry Struckman, Nevada Union High School FFA entry. _...A nother FFA prize winner at the State Fair: Alan Johnson, Grass Valley, whose female junior yearling shorthorn took a blue ribbon..... Placer Herald, Auburn, oldest continuously published newspaper in‘California, changed han ds again last month, being merged with the relatively new Placer News, owned by J. A. Grenier. vopéy BUDGET.....On a tight budget? A UCLA prof suggests buying 4 costly item....Sound strange? One highly decorative object may makeup for a whole roomful of inexpensive furniture, according to Frances M. Obst, author of a new book on "Art and Design ir’ Home Living”...-She suggests that it may be better to skimp on the living room rug in order to buy, for example, “one decorative object with great design quality...One handsome piece will give the room an important lift and draw attention away from your less expensive things”... . .Soall your budget must be able to absorb is a houseful of inexpensive furnishings, plusthat expensive attentiondrawing item. But if you buy the decorative object first, how can you tell if there will be enough left for the furnishings. And if you buy the furnishings first, there may not be enough left for the expensive bait and the furniture may not color schemewithit.....Oh, dear, is there a UCLA book on frustration? ---Dean Thompson a CALIFORNIA THE BIG HOLE AT BODEGA A great deal of discussion is now underway regarding whether or not the Pacific Gas and Electric Company should be allowed to install an atomic generating plant at Bodega Harbor on the Sonoma County coast. The opposition has taken many forms. Right now the main cry is that the installation would be located too closeto the San Andreas fault for safety. Practically all of the opposition is motivated by a desire to preserve the “e961 ‘¢ 1equieideg***1033NN O4L** “9 o8eg 9 a8eqg** scenic character of the area--particularly, Bodega Har-bor, and Bodega Head, which is the harbor's massive breakwater. Well, I hate to sound a discouraging note--but anyone whowill go look at Bodega will know that the battle has already been lost. And that is typical: the battle for beauty always comes too late, after the landscape is consigned to ruin. The entire north and west shore of the harbor has been filled in anda wide new road, unpaved but very much in business, has been installed. Personally, I can't think of a more destructive location for a road, But that is not the point. The point is that the road is there, authorized by the county supervisors, to serve the construction of the atomic plant. And now that the road is there, can you think of anyone who might turn around and remove it, evenifthe Atomi¢ Energy Commission finally refuses to approve the atomic plant location? Not only is the road in place, atop valuable tideland spawning grounds, an obstruction to the secnic shoreline of the historic little harbor, but excavation for the atomic plant is well along. No wonderthey have signs along that new road forbidding the entry of “unauthorized” personnel! Stand at the rim of the big hole they have dug, where they are already pouring foundations for the plant, and look across to where part of Bodega Head has been neatly sliced away. af a
