Volume 41 Number 34 Two Are Hurt In Fire Near Nevada City About 25 acres of brush and timber were destroyéd and two firefighters were badly burned Saturday in a blaze below ~ the Champion Mine Road about four miles west of Nevada City, Nevada City residents had a grandstand seat for viewing the. fire retardant operations of the. four aerialtankers operating out of Loma Rica County Airport, Jerry A. Miller of Grass Vale ley and Joe Haggard of Sacramento were both severely burned when the fire trapped them while they were operating a bulldozer on the fire lines. The men abandoned the cat and jumped into an irrigation ditch to escape the flames, The intense heat melted the metal helmet of one of the men, The men threw an aluminized asbestos blanket over them while in the ditch, The heat virtually destroyed the blanket, but the covering was credited with helping to keep them alive, Yesterday morning both men were listed in “satisfactory” condition in Miners Hospital. According to officials of the California Division of Forestry, theblaze was man caused, The fire started at 11:20 a.m, and 100 men, earth moving equip. Ment and aerial tankers were used to control the blaze. Mopping up operations continued until Sunday. More fire pictures on Grand Jury Calls For A Firm Road Standard Policy The Nevada County Grand Jury yesterday took the board of supervisors to task for accepting inferior roads into the county road system, Grand Jury Foreman Harry M, Pharis and the members of the road committee, Warren E, Ridinger, Albert Troost and O. H. Fuller, appeared before the supervisors Tuesday and presented the board with a three page report. In order to avoid accepting roads that do not meet any requirements or standards, the
committee recommended that a resolution determining the policy for road acceptancebe adopted " and that this policy be unhesistantly adhered to, “T he taxpayers and voters of this county have a right to and should demand that its legislative body actin a consistent and reasonable fashion, uninfluenced by pressures or forces of whatever nature which are not in the best interest of the county as a whole, There is no logical reas son for the inconsistencies presently existing, ™ the report stated, Thereport called Banner Mountain Road a prime example of a road taken, into the county system without right-ofway study and noted that although it was done years ago, it is now prohibitive to buy necessary rights-of-way for realignment to accomodate the existing problem, “It is rather tragic to think that all the taxpayers in this (Continued on Page 16) Freeway Agreement With The Creditors Reviewed By Court The uncertain status of the construction of the Nevada City seg ment of the Grass ValleyNevada City Freeway may be clarified this week when the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Sacramentoreviews a creditor's agreement for contractor Norman I, Fadel, Inc, The matter was scheduled to be heard late yesterday afternoon and both state highway officials and attorneys for the contractor's bonding company meeting with Nevada City officials last week indicated that the muddled picture of the financial status of the contractor could be clarified at the hearin e The job was stopped earlier this year when Fadel initiated bankruptcy proceedingsin federal court, The job was allowed to proceed again when Fadel's bonding company advanced the firm money to pay off creditors over a long term period agreed to by the creditors, At thesession last week, a representative of the bonding company indicated that his firm was bound by the creditor's agreement, but if a review of the agreement indicated that it was not going to work, his firm was ready to start making payments, T he state moved in and took over the work on two other pro-. jects being constructed by Fadel . last week, but took no action on the Nevada City job. A spokesman for the Division of Highways in Sacramento was contacted yesterday for com=ment on the status of the work, As of Friday, he said, throughout each working day of last week there was an ayerage of 100 men on the job and they were accomplishing work on critical items. These critical items included abuttments on the Broad Street Bridge, placing of 60 inch concrete reinforced drains and completion and opening to traffic of the Gold Flat Bridge.
