He most likely had to light his . way down the street with a lantern, . Today, the 120 residents of th village go about their evening rounds in the friendly glow of street lights! The historic and scenic village of Washington is a thoroughly enchanting place, . . .nestled peacefully in a beautiful High Sierra valley, thru which the sometimes turbulent South Yuba River courses, with a faintly New England look, situated on a gentle rise above the main street, Here, some 20 pupils may enjoy the only real "playground" in the area, Axsmall "city park" is taking shape“on one corner.-A decora= tive fountain has been provided by the Lions Club; and friends of the community have installed
a handsome log fence bordering the rear of the park, Principal business establishments in Washington include the old hotel where the famous lawman Earp stayed; the Yuba House; a grocery store; two large campgrounds and the miniscule U, S, Post Office, Residents and visitors find that-most of their daily needs are well served by these facilities, Mr, and Mrs, Douglas Ribble own the well-stocked grocery store and one of the campgrounds, . . .River Rest. They came to the area in the early 30s from Colfax, . . .where both had attended school, Douglas spent several years as the superintendent of Spanish Mine in Washington; and 21 years ago he and Mrs, Ribble purchased Fireworks use nets $150 fine A.P, Kaspar of San Jose appeared before U. S. Magistrate Esther Mix in Sacramento, Aug. 27 and was fined $150 for discharging fireworks within the Tahoe National Forest, Supervisor Henry E, Branagh announced, One hundred dollars was suspended as a condition of probation for one year, Kaspar's fireworks display was observed by a lookout and he was promptly cited by the Forest Service, Reflecting on the consequences of the unsafe practice, Supervisor Branagh stated, "I believe this fine will make many people realize the seriousness of such a deed, There is a tiny schoolhouse, Scenic Washington is an enchanting place property. . . .21 acres.. bordered by the Yuba River and Washington Creek. Ten years ago they established River Rest Campground which now contains 55 units, Within the next five years they hope to expand the camp to 150 units, Tom Walsh, whose knowledge of the area is nothing short of fabulous, owns the Washington Hotel building. . .which houses many artifacts and memorabilia of byegone days, Here one may partake of tasty meals; and enjoy a variety of beverages at the old bar which, in years gone by was well patronized by miners, prospectors and casual visitors, It is no strain on the imagination to conjure up ghosts of the past anywhere in the village! _Howard and Irene Vance now own the stately old Yuba House, ‘It is their permanent home, but occasionally they rent a few rooms, . . .primarily to locals who sometimes have a guest or two too many for home accommodation, Yuba House is no longer a "'transient'' hotel, however. In its earlier years this old structure housed, . .at various times. . .a saloon and barber Shop, with a dance hall on the upper story; and at one time, pastors of two different faiths held worship services there, It was completely redone a few years ago, and was purchased by the Vances in 1965, As one drives out of town across the South Yuba River, the new bridge construction project provides a point of interest, The road beyond the bridge winds along a twisting, turning route to the PineAire Campground, . . .owned by Don Schmidt of Nevada City, This 47-unit campground is managed by Bob and Louise Ohrum, who live on the premises in a large mobile home overlooking the facility. . . .which includes a cement-slab. square dance area, Established in 1969, the camp will be expanded by several additional riverside mits in 1972; and later on, Schmidt hopes to realize plans for a further expansion in the “apple orchard" section on a rise above the present site, Those who elect to make Washington either a permanent place of residence, or a vacation retreat, are to be envied, Theirs is a pleasant, peaceful existance, . . surrounded by fabulous scenery, coupled with friendships among some of Nevada county’s finest citizens, Visit there once, . . .you'll want to return! ‘
