The Jack Mills’ have a small
sign on their access road marking a "skunk crossing". It was
meant as a joke but darned if
. there hasn't been a flock of the
little stripers hanging around
here this summer, In the Mills’
backyard is another sign, '"Rabbit Transit." That one is for real
too. (Wouldn't "Rabbit Transit"
make a great name for a trucking firm that transports rabbits?)

causing us to dance in the highway. No offense, Truckee, but

September 17, 1971 is the 184th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United
States, This "epochal document" was in the works from May 14 to September 15 of 1787 with
38 men representing 12 states working out rules and compromises that made it the reasonable
and workable document that the past two centuries have proven it to be, Rhode Island was the
13 state in the Confederacy but sent no delegate to the convention, It may have been represented
by William Jackson who served as convention secretary but he apparently had no official standing,
George Washington was chairman of the convention and Gouverneur Morris of Pennsylvania was
the leading member of "--a Committee of Style" ‘which gave the Constitution its final literary
form, Some other familiar names that participated in its forming were Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison, It "was transmitted on September 28, 1787 to the several
states for ratification."' Constitution Week, September 17 through September 23, was established
by Presidential Proclamation in 1956, It is Public Law 84-915 and was set aside as "A time for
study and observance of the acts which resulted in the formation of the Constitution,” Many
truths have been written about our Constitution with better words than mine. To quote my Colliers Encyclopedia, it is "one written document setting up a framework of permanent words
which partly controls the organization, the machinery, and in part even the direction of further
growth," "The written constitution is above party; it is the center of the national tradition, the
symbol of unity." "It forces a fair measure of stability into government, and yet has shown
remarkable capacity for expanding," Some recent applications of these outstandingly fine principles
have proven "no country can ever be 'a government of laws and not of men’,"'
But our Constitution was set up to be flexible .and it has proven equal to the situation, Now
all that we need is for good mento come to the aid of their fine Constitition, As John Wesley once
said "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to stand by and do nothing."
Nevada City is doing something, They are enlisting the aid of patriotic people by staging a Parade
on Sunday, September 12 at 2 p.m, Our community will add its mute to the effort by participating,
