POOR OLD LIZZIEGETS WELL
’, EARNED REST
After 17 years of faithful service, during which time she
scooted Dr. Chappell of Grass
Valley around on his professional visits, held pipe in
her teeth, pulled roots from
clogged sewers and did other
menial tasks. that go with the
plumbing __ business, Fred
Breese's familiar white "Lizzie", has been retired onaccount
of the infirmities and rattles that
come. with old age, and her
familir form will be soon on the
streets no more,
True, Lizzie, like grandma's
socks, which had to have a new
heel this year and a new toe
next year, was not exactly the
same in body as she was in 1913,
but in spirit she was the same
kicking bronco she had always
‘been.
Lizzie, according to Fred, had
quite an enviable record, At one
time she made. the round trip
from Nevada City to Tiajuana on
15 gallons of gas -or per‘haps it was 50 gallons; anyhow
there was never a time she
couldn't show her heels toa Cadillac, or any other car in ‘its
class,
Lizzie will spend her last days
way down on the Middle Yuba
near the Delhi Mine where, with
one leg -I mean one wheel,
jacked up she will suffer the
humiliation of driving a centrifugal pump; and there she will
stay because there is no road to
get out over. a

SIERRA MINE TO BE WORKED
UNDER SNOW
DEC, 5, 1930
Mining under novel conditions
will be carried on at the Four
hills Mine on Lower Spencer
Lake this coming winter.
The surface works of the mine
are in a place where the snow
falls and drifts to a depth of 40
feet during an ordinary winter.
The boarding house was built
three stories high. Then a flag
pole was put on-top in order that
it might be located when everything else was buried under the
snow. An entrance to the building
was made through the roof. The
occupants live in semi darkness
much of the time, A series of
tunnels in the snow connect the.
various buildings.
Andrew Bachels of Goodyear
Bar has a lease and he plans to
keep ten stamps going through
the winter.
