BILL PODBREGER works on his retirement special,
Local Realtors were urged
this week to encourage county
controls on land development
instead of opposing them.
"Give people who buy property a break. Don't make it easy
for them to get into impossible
situations just to sell lots,"
Dist. Atty. Harold Berliner said
in a speech to the Nevada County
Board of Realtors.
The DA accused local Realtors
of constant opposition to controls, including the county's new
ordinance requiring 1 1/2 acre
lots if sewers and public water
are not available.
However, during the questionanswer period, some Realtors
responded that they have supported controls which were later

life cruising the high seas?
It would, but it takes money, know how and a first class
boat. It sounds like a dream unless you have that very important item --. money. Then you can buy a ticket and sail anywhere,
William (Bill) Podbreger doesn't have lots of money, but
he has had a lifelong dream to tour the world so he is going to
do it.
Podbreger has the know-how and is inthe process of building
a 40-foot ketch, two-mast sail boat. In fact, he is building two
identical boats at his home in Sunset.
His craftsmanship is visible in-the sleek looking concrete
t every yard in Nevada County possesses one of these. The Podbregers in Sunset,
west of Grass Valley, have two 40-foot sailboats under construction in their front

In lieu of an August Pack
meeting, Cub Pack 275 recently took a train trip to the zoo
and Fairytale Town at Williamland Park in Sacramento. Twenty-six Cubs and ten leaders
journeyed to Auburn by bus and
truck where they were to meet
the train.
Finding they had a two hour
delay, they visited the park at
Auburn dnd enjoyed their lunches
under the towering trees.

Podbreger and his wife "Jo" will sell their Nevada county property and head for the ocean,
The boat building has been a family project. The boat the
pair plans to retire in has every built in comfort kitchen,
heating, bathroom, living room and room to sleep six.
The sail boat will weigh 14 tons and carry a 4-ton ballast.
It will have unlimited range by sail and has diesel power auxiliary which will range 800 miles,
The specially made craft will have three uses, It can be
used for commercial. fishing, cruising or for charter purposes,
The Sunset pair plan to cruise, but should the time come for
business, they will be prepared. However, Podbreger said "We
plan to make a living the rest of our life on our boat.” .
The couple will make a shakedown cruise next summer.
They plant to visit Alaska, The following year when they move .
aboard, the Podbregers will set sail for the South Seas or Europe.
They haven't decided which.

On the hull the cement is only one quarter inch thick but is
heavily reinforced with eight layers of wire. On the open market
Podbreger estimates a boat of this caliber would cost $45,000.
Podbreger first started sailing when_he was 14 years old,
taking a job on a sailing vessel, He returned to land-and married,
but ae kept his goal to return to sailing and retiring at the
age ls

has been constructing the retirement boat for 10 months, Next
summer he plans to have boats finished. 1,
